Well since this game is actually going to take place (sorry jj) we might as well have a topic on it. On a good note it's parents weekend, on a bad note they are playing PFL leader Dayton. Well, at least the kids will get a nice dinner out of the deal.

Any truth to the rumor that VU will dust off the playbook and bring back the Lonesome Polecat???

Wow, the Lonsome Polecat. People look at me funny when I say Valpo revolutionized the "Wildcat" offense when they rolled out the Lonesome Polecat in the 1980s. Were you there CO at that fateful, historic day in the snow flurries in Dayton when Valpo was trounced like 56-0 using the "polecat." That was back wehn Dayton was a perennial D3 championship contender with Augustana.

Yeah, we were there! Every time I mention the Lonesome Polecat to the QB, he cringes in pain - bad memories I think. I think VU gave up 50 points or more 6 times that season. Would you believe it was Koch's last?

We're now 1-6 with but 4 games to go. Unfortunately we will probably be 1-8 before we have a shot at getting our second and possibly our third win of the season.2-9 is my prediction for this year. Don't think we could beat Wittenberg (undefeated),Wabash, Hopkins or Augsburg either,so why bother to think about about playing D3 ball. The only real solution is: DROP FOOTBALL.

After reviewing the stats and realizing that VU had a total of 60 yds. on offense,I've changed my W-L predictions. 1-10. Book it! Thank goodness for volleyball and the soccer programs. Let's drop football and divert funds to these programs. They're winners.

When the ath director was hired he was asked to explain what going to the next level meant. Part of his answer was for football to compete for the pfl championship every few years. Well its been longer than that and worse than he could have imagined.

I don't know how you play a conference opponent (somebody you should ideally be competitive with) and go 0-13 on 3rd down.

I have been watching VU football faithfully since 1990. Yesterday's performance was among the all-time worst, and that is saying something.

Please remember these were mostly freshman in key roles. God knows the circumstances are getting beyond Valpo's control. How can we win without any good luck? We can't hold anyone accountable for this. It's all just bad luck. By the way, does anybody remember just 5 years ago or so that President Fong of Butler formed a committee to evaluate the football program at Butler. One option they had was to drop football. The committee decided they would keep football and the evaluation came down heavily on the football coach who then resigned. Butler has been getting slowly better ever since. That year of the evaluation they beat one team, Valpo. The same coach Valpo has today was leading that Crusader team. Today Butler is 4-0 and tied for first in the PFL with Dayton & Drake and are 7-0 overall.

I have been watching VU football faithfully since 1990. Yesterday's performance was among the all-time worst, and that is saying something. You missed the 1988 season: 1988: 0-9-1 Coach: Bill Koch W/L Date PF Opponent PA Location Notes T 09/10/1988 0 Wisconsin-Oshkosh 0 Oshkosh, WI L 09/17/1988 17 Wayne St. (MI) 48 Valparaiso, IN L 09/24/1988 19 Wisconsin-Stevens Point 56 Valparaiso, IN L 10/01/1988 0 Indianapolis (IN) 56 Indianapolis, IN L 10/08/1988 0 Franklin (IN) 62 Valparaiso, IN L 10/15/1988 0 Butler (IN) 56 Valparaiso, IN L 10/22/1988 14 Ashland (OH) 41 Ashland, OH L 10/29/1988 14 Evansville (IN) 28 Valparaiso, IN L 11/05/1988 6 Dayton (OH) 55 Dayton, OH L 11/12/1988 6 Saint Joseph's (IN) 50 Rensselaer, IN or: cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/coaching/alltime_coach_game_by_game.php?coachid=3596&year=1988 If VU is serious about competing in football, then changes beyond a new field will be needed. During evaluation time after the season is complete, I would suggest talking to a successful Division I coach that previously had success at a lower level (Tressel, Paul Johnson, & Brian Kelly come to mind). No, not about them taking the VU job, but what it would take (facilities, capital spending on coaching staffs, schedule, etc.) to succeed at a school such as VU, with limitations of the no-scholarship conference. And maybe find out if they know of any young coaches that will be head coach material, and might be willing to take on a project like VU as a stepping stone to other coaching positions. With the high school talent within a three hour drive of VU, our football program should be more competitive within our conference. We should have the possibility of a 9-1 season every few years, not a 1-9 season. Knowing some of the players from the late '80s, I can tell you that everyone on the team is giving it everything they can. They deserve our support and thanks!!

Oh, I'm aware of the late 80s as well. They were playing Division II, which I believe had a 48-scholarship limit at that time. I think Valpo had 24 scholarships that they divided up to field a team. That was the beginning of three-year winless streak that coincided with the end of Koch/beginning of Tom Horne. I like your suggestions. I have no doubt the players are trying as hard as they can.

Well, let's get involved. If lack of effort isn't the problem then it must be lack of talent, lack of coaching, lack of commitment, lack of facillities, lack of a winning history, lack of fan and student support and just a "who gives a damn attitude. DROP FOOTBALL! Can't get more involved that that. Volleyball forever!
