The Ncaa has put a bunch of institutions on notice to shape up their academics or start losing scholarships and practice time. Here's some addition data from the NCAA report which is available at the USA Today article.
ORU is in the bottom 10% not only in baseball, but also Men's Tennis, Men's Soccer and Women's Basketball. Valpo, by the way, is in the top 10% in several sports with being in the top 40% being the worst performing sport. Pretty good for us and awfully bad for ORU, particularly as a private school with supposed high academic standards.

This news really doesn't come as much of a surprise to me. After all, we are talking about a school whose president canceled all classes at the drop of a hat during the basketball tournament because a couple hundred students started a chant urging him to do so. He canceled all classes on ORU's campus the day of the championship games this year and they still had a less-than-stellar student turnout for both games. This school clearly values athletics over academics and will eventually pay the hefty price for that. I would be embarrassed to say that I graduated from such an "institution of higher learning."

Don't forget Southern Utah, which just lost like 3 or 4 scholarships for academic reasons (to say nothing of their problems with athletes and alcohol lately).

So I wander over here looking for ANY sign of intelligent life regarding the Mid-Con name change, and instead stumble onto this pile of CRAP. If you guys knew anything about - well - ANYTHING, you would know that these NCAA figures are based on data from several years ago that, at least in ORU's case, has already been rectified. Simply put, when really good juco baseball players transfer in and then leave for the pros after one or two years, it hurts the formula that the NCAA uses for graduation rates. Same kind of problems at other baseball powers such as Wichita State. But what would you yardbirds know about losing really good baseball players? I'm sure all your baseball players graduate right on time. BECAUSE THEY HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO GO DO!!  |

Okay, so you make a logical argument in defense of the baseball team (even if I don't completely agree). Do you care to defend all of ORU's other sports that were towards the bottom of the rankings? (even though they were not penalized by the NCAA, many of ORU's programs show substandard academic performance) |

Please don't encourage a discourse with him...I can speak from experience that it is a waste of your time...he's right your're wrong and that's the only way he sees it....even in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary....

We've had people get into the minors every year, but not anyone leave before graduation (that I can remember). It's not often that many players in the Midwest leave early, only a few in baseball.

I looked at the ORU Board to see what their posters are saying about the lagging academic progress issue and I can't find a single comment about it - putting their defensive spin on it, agreeing with it, or otherwise. If that was us, our posters would be all over it. Seems strange...
