i was actually just talking to a friend before class today about this, and he said something about moving huegli offices to the old union, tearing down huegli, and then putting up two buildings there: one for education, and the other for nursing, because apparently they want to get the nursing students closer to campus. i can understand replacing miller, b/c it is pretty outdated, but lebien is only 20 years old and has been kept up to date technologically, as far as i've seen.
for us history and english and poli sci students in the basement of mueller, all we really need right now are new desks. the ones in use now have been around as long as professor trost (rocking over 45 years experience) at least.

I was in Valpo over the weekend and picked up a copy of the most recent Torch. The lead article dealt with President Heckler's recent meeting with the university community regarding the results of the planning process that has been going on for the past year. One of the areas of focus, as I understand it from the article, is the education department. The article did not come out and say that the president promised a new facility, but I was reading the between the lines and I think the emphasis this department will receive includes a new building. I think previous posters are correct, it is to be located south of the softball field. I also believe that the comments posted here about Huegli's demise are also correct. I believe the education facility was on line to be started last year or this year --funding at some level has been started --but the sinking economy put a hold on those plans. Okinawa, vu72, anyone else, what do you think? I would agree with braveone that we really, really need this facility. I know that the president, when he saw our dorms, decided almost immediately that dorms needed to be put at the top, or at least close to the top, of the "needs" list, but I feel that the eduation building and a renovated Neils should head the list, followed by the dorms. Not to mention, of course, a new track. (I cannot understand why VU is unable to move forward with this.) Paul

weathernerd, LeBien is actually 40 years old. It went online in 1968 or 1969, I can't remember which. The university is thinking about moving LeBien, that is for sure. The reasons are (1) it is located outside the main part of campus, and with the hospital moving, it is no longer necessary to have LeBien at the current location; and (2) the university will, in the long term, own all of McIntyre and use that land, plus the LeBien site and the old Immanuel school site, to put in a new baseball field, and soccer fields, to merge the athletics district of campus into that area. Update: the construction fences are up along the south side of Gellersen, as well as around the construction trailer. Here is a link to a new construction page for the project: www.valpo.edu/construction/

Steel has yet to go up, but the foundation appears mostly complete. This project may be delayed since there were rumors that the steel workers and brick layers were going on strike starting today.

The steel is being erected at a feverish pace. I'll try and snap some photos soon.

Here's an image from Design Organization's (the architect) Facebook page from yesterday's topping-out ceremony of the Don Fites Engineering Innovation Center.

Took this yesterday, kind of dark outside though. They have some of the windows in, and the rest were sitting outside. The bricklaying seems to be completely done. The outside looks like the rest of the building. Kind of boring and 70's looking. They kept with the dark windows on top... never really understood that. There is a section of the inside that is complete and there has been classes in there I believe. It looks really modern and interesting. The one wall had a glass case with posters in them, which seems to make the building look more professional than the standard thumb-tack on bulletin boards.

Thanks for the picture update! I can't wait to see what the windows look like when they're in place.
