In a sense, I have nothing but good things to say about Valpo social life(since I met my wife at VU), but there wasn't anything to do 15 years ago and my understanding is that hasn't improved much. Actually from my understanding is things have gotten worse. We used to leave every weekend (except Spring Weekend) to go to Purdue because there was a whole lot more going on (including D1 football, sorry I had to do that). Every once in a while there would be things like a concert going on that would be worth sticking around for, but not often. things drastically improved when the movie theatre opened up a couple years ago. my freshman year, before the theatre, my friends and i played networked computer games.

Another thing that has improved a lot are the dining options. National chains such as Red Robin, Noodles & Company (only location in NW Indiana), Qdoba (only location in NW Indiana), and TGI Fridays have appeared just in the past four years, making trips to other cities for good food unnecessary.

What movie theater opened up there in the last few years? I know in 1999-2000, there was a dollar theater in the old Walmart location, in the superstore's parking lot. There was also a movie rental place where the movies were a $1 for students, so it sounds like things are really starting to move there. It was 2002-2003 when Target, Kohl's and all of those stores came to the area just off of 49 coming from Chesterton. Great to hear about some growth around there.

A Cinemark theater opened up about 2 years ago and has 12 screens I think. It's a pretty large facility for our size of a city, and is located northeast of IN-49 and IN-2. They offer student discounts, so tickets are typically $6 or $7 (maybe weathernerd can correct me), which is relatively inexpensive for a new movie in a nice theater. In the same shopping area is also a new JC Penney (department store) and a few clothing shops. There are much fewer reasons to travel to Chesterton, Portage, or Merrillville for shopping or eating now which is definitely a plus for students.

One of my friends works for admissions as a tour guide and they are suppose to sell Chicago as something for Valpo students to do. Yeah, maybe a Saturday afternoon, but when night rolls around its either to the Frats or boredom. You can only spend so many weekends watching movies and sitting at the cafe for endless hours.
