Thought I'd start another thread since it's been so quiet on this board. Last summer I started a similar thread and it provided some pretty good discussion. I live out of state, so I really don't know what's going on with campus this summer. Haven't heard much about plans for the future, new projects, etc. Thanks, Paul

I just got to campus for the summer, and I was planning on taking pictures of the new happenings soon. Here's a quick rundown though: 1. The North Loop road is largely complete, as is the north entrance. I thought the new north entrance was supposed to extend all the way to Lincolnway, but it appears only to go to LaPorte. Does anyone know if plans for the entrance on Lincolnway were scrapped, and why? Also, it appears there is going to be some kind of sign or torch marking the Study Road entrance to campus, but I'm not completely sure what they're doing. 2. I took a peek into the new fitness center (old bookstore), and it's really coming along. There's a big sign out front with a rendering of the completed product, so I'll take a picture and show everyone what it's supposed to be like. That's all I can think of right now. Look for pictures soon.

Pictures taken today: 1. New Health and Wellness Center, which will occupy the space of the former bookstore next to the ARC. Opening Fall 2009. 2. New North Entrance near Scheele Hall. It should have torches just like the Main Entrance off of US 30. 3. North Loop Road. It might be hard to see tell where this is, but on the left is the former Career Center (Alumni Hall), and at the end of the road is the new North Entrance pictured above. In the background, you can see the new 4-story Uptown East Apartments under construction. 4. More of the North Loop Road/North Entrance. 5. Speaking of Uptown East Apartments, here is a view from Lincolnway. These apartments are right between LaPorte Avenue and Lincolnway, and are a being leased by Valparaiso University for Juniors and Seniors.

Oh wow, they're big! I'd barely heard of these, but it seems like a nice addition to the campus housing options, and hopefully to the neighborhood.
Where are they exactly? What's on either side? What do they replace?
Any idea how many units, or what they'll charge students? The dorms always seemed horribly expensive given the rather soft off-campus rental market. Just another example of VU-enforced price gouging of the students (the require buy-ins at the cafeteria are my other pet peeve).

Here's the website: www.theuptowneast.comThe university has leased 44 units for a total of 132 students, and they filled up very quickly. I'm not exactly sure of the price....maybe the website mentions it. These apartments will be replacing the Compass Pointe apartments, and I'm not exactly sure what was on the site before. I think the old Big Whell Restaurant was one of them? The location is directly north or campus, right on LaPorte and Lincolnway. Here's an image from the architect's website. The construction site is visible in the bottom on the picture. It's directly across from the Deaconess house, if that helps.

That's the area where the four small apartment houses of Homer Court were. Everyone used to beg and plead three years before they were seniors to get in there because of how popular and sort of out of the way the houses were. I suppose it was time for those houses to go, but they were an off-campus nuance for those students begging to get off campus because it was a good spot for an off-campus party at any moment.

the biggest question in my mind is whether uptown east is going to be ready for the students when they come back in august. there's still a lot of work to do if they're shooting to be habitable in 2 1/2 months.

Ah, next to the Credit Union. Looks like there wasn't much there, so should be an upgrade.
Was this the location of the laundromat/tanning salon that made a go at it back in the late 90's?
And was the Big Wheel further west? But, if memory serves, it's also gone?

The Wheel was at Garfield and Lincolnway as I recall. It has been closed for a couple of years now. Any improvement to the campus end of Lincolnway wil be a major gain. There are still lots of dumpy properties at that end.

This was the area between the laundry and the credit union. Recently, the laudromat/tanning salon had a facelift (exterior anyways) to make it look significantly better as the area around it is improved...
valporun: this area is east of Homer Court

The city is completely changing the East Lincolnway area....it's taken a while, but the improvments are noticeable and will continue.....This stuff doesn't happen overnight....but I give Mayor Costas kudos for his forsight in getting this area upgraded
