Hope he brings OC from 2007 or 2008/2009 team with him.Would be fun to see Valpo run a high octane offense. I agree it will be nice to see some offense. I would completely respect Coach Carlson's decision to bring his own guys in, but imagine his offense alongside Coach Bernardi's defense. Hmmmm.

And his overall collegiate W -L record is: 97-104. Good luck! jj, seriously, get some counseling. You CAN be happy again. It will take time and lots of support from your family and friends (do you have any?) but you can succeed. We here on the board are all behind your finding joy and happiness!! jj won't be happy till we either drop football or drop all sports to div. III. He accepts failure. He thinks Valpo is just not good enough to win in div.1 non-scholarship. Others schools do it with better facilities and there is nothing yet that I've seen that Valpo won't get better facilities when the economic times allow it. Also, jj, don't give up on Carlson in the first 3 years. After all they gave Stacy Adams 6 years. I think Carlson with get 6 years if not more.

Crusaders pick Carlson to replace Adams www.post-trib.com/sports/1992001,fbc-vu-0115.article January 15, 2010 POST-TRIBUNE STAFF REPORT VALPARAISO -- Dale Carlson will be introduced as Valparaiso University's 16th football coach at a news conference this afternoon. Carlson has been the head coach at Ohio Dominican since 2004. His record there was 36-27. He jump-started the program, going from 0-10 in Ohio Dominican's first year of football to 12-1 in 2007. Ohio Dominican won the Mid-States Football Association, Mideast League title that year. He was named the MSFA Mideast coach of the year in 2001 at Tri-State and at ODU in 2007. Carlson's last two teams posted 7-3 records. In 2009, Ohio Dominican overcame a slow start with six straight victories and was ranked No. 19. This was Carlson's 21st year as a head coach. His overall record is 109-105-3. Before coming to the NAIA , Carlson launched Tri-State's program. He also coached at Taylor and Lakeland (Wis.). Carlson recorded his 100th victory on Oct. 25, 2008, when ODU defeated Taylor 24-6. Valparaiso athletic director Mark LaBarbera chose Carlson over more than 100 candidates, whittling the list down to three finalists over the holidays. Carlson replaces Stacy Adams, who resigned after compiling a 15-40 record over five years.

And his overall collegiate W -L record is: 97-104. Good luck! GI JJ, stats don't tell the whole story. I believe his record is 109-105-3, but regardless, you should take into consideration that his record includes starting programs from scratch along with rebuilding programs. Quite impressive, IMO. Plus, you have to respect a guy who thrives on and is successful at building and rebuilding programs.

And his overall collegiate W -L record is: 97-104. Good luck! Thanks JJ. While everyone else is on their knees and pumped up with fanboy excitement, it's good to see reactions that come from outside the blind hysteria. The fact that this coach comes in with a losing record for his career is a pretty interesting tidbit, I'm glad you pointed it out. I highly doubt anyone else would have mentioned it. I 100% hope this coach produces outstanding results, it'd be nice not to fear the Valpo score on ESPN's bottom line ticker anymore, but I want to be level-headed in any amount of optimism this guy brings with him. Anything less is letting the University off too easy. Someone else said JJ accepts failure. I think it's 100% the opposite. As the saying goes, you have to punch your weight. Continuing to step into the ring with a heavyweight boxer to repeatedly get pummeled -- constant, consistent failure -- and being content doing it over and over again with no hope of success would be accepting of failure. Realizing it's a lost cause, never getting into that ring again, and moving on with life is just being practical and realistic. I don't necessarily agree with JJ, but I understand where he's coming from. I think he finds failure intolerable, and it's less of a failure to admit being out your depth than it is to endure year- after year- after year- after year- after year of a failed team, failed results, failed coaches, failed facilities, failed legeacy, etc.

And keep in mind his last two stops he has started the program from scratch.

Again, you have to take into consideration that his record includes a career of building programs from scratch and rebuilding struggling programs. How can anyone possibly say he has a losing record under those circumstances?

JJ, let's give the guy a chance...he's at least owed that, isn't he?
Larry Coker was an impressive 60-15 with an MNC (would have been two MNCs if not for one of the worst calls in the history of sports against *) and let the Miami program slip into oblivion during his tenure.
You know where 60-15 got him? UTSA. Sometimes W-L records don't mean a whole lot for a variety of reasons. You should know this.

I can't believe you are actually taking guys like jj and rink seriously. Maybe the two of them can get a group discount on counseling. ;D Carlson was just named the National Independent NAIA Coach of the Year. :dance Who did they expect to be named? Pete Carroll??

I used cfbdatawarehouse.com to look at the recent schedules for VU and Ohio Dominican. In 2008, both football teams played Marian College (Indianapolis). ODU beat Marian at Marian by a score of 70 - 7. VU lost to Marian at Brown Field by a score of 13 -10. In 2009, both ODU and VU played St. Joseph's (IN). VU lost in Rensselaer by a score of 31 - 6. ODU played them in Ohio, and won 45 - 14.
I think this is a good hire, and hope that VU is more competitive on the field this fall.

My guess is that Old Dominican could have won the PFL in 2008 and 2009. Talk about fire power!!
