Instead of a mascot that crusades for victory, we now have one that crusades for political correctness and bland conformity.
Nice going, Valpo...

The new mascot was created by students at Valpo. Just an FYI.

Old college try, meet old college fail. Time for someone with a clue to intervene and correct the nightmare. Frankly, someone should have stepped in a long time ago. I'll be sending back my ValpoFund card with a $0 donation and a note that I won't be giving another dime until the mascot embarassment has ended. It might sound silly to some of you, but I feel that strongly about what's going on at VU. Our public sports image, the mascot, is now a joke. My alma mater has a homemade mascot. A homemade joke. Once so proud of Valpo, now so ashamed. It really hurts. I just want the debacle to be over.

I emailed IMC sometime last week asking about the mascot, the rationale behind it, and what they plan to do about it in the future. So far I haven't heard anything.
I fear that IMC doesn't really care about what students, alumni, or anyone else thinks about the new mascot or brand. No one wants to admit their wrong, so they'll pretend that everyone actually likes it.
If the students really wanted to send a message they would boycott the new crusader. Don't acknowledge it when it's near you. Don't take pictures with it. Don't clap for it. Heck, turn your back when it walks by you. You get enough people doing that and maybe the message will start to get through to IMC.

I agree that it needs to be changed and I know it hurts when you care about something so much and it disappoints, but withholding funds and being ASHAMED of your alma mater just because of a mascot seems a bit dramatic. I may not agree with the mascot, but it doesn't make me ashamed or embarrassed of Valpo.

agreed. i think that although the mascot is pretty crappy, you shouldn't take out your frustrations on what the administration is doing on the student-athletes.

Let's remember again that students were left in charge of designing the new mascot outfit. IMC did not make the decision. Most of the changes that IMC is trying to make for athletics is to make it more fun for the events and for the students. They are trying to make student life fun on campus. So all of the ripping you are doing on the students who designed it is pretty crappy. I don't understand why people feel it is so necessary to put others down and disrespect the effort that has been put in to the effort for the rebrand. I was part of this process and I spent many months working late at night dedicating my time to this effort. I sacrificed my time spent with my family. There are very good people in IMC and people who really care about what they are doing working for the University.

Rink, you have been a pretty consistent sour grape guy, but this post really takes the award for being the most over the top. That by the way, is quite something given some of the things jj and others have posted. Let's take a look at your post in detail: I won't be giving another dime until the mascot embarassment has ended. Really? You are going to stop supporting Valpo because you don't like the mascot?? Look in the mirror, say it again, and then try to keep a straight face. Once so proud of Valpo, now so ashamed. So of all the great academic programs, successful alumni, incredible people in administration, teaching and support roles, great role models across the board, etc., etc, etc, etc, etc, you are ashamed again because of a mascot, whose outfit, which is suppose to be comical and light hearted, doesn't evoke fear, trembling and repulsion on the part of our opponents??? I guess I'm kind of embarrassed that someone with such a shallow view of life and the university is actually an alumni.

Yeah, that's my only comment on this whole thing: namely, mascot is not real high on the list of things I care about (as a fan, that is; I'm not an alumnus, so I can't speak from that point of view).
My only other comment: if you were looking for something to be embarrassed about in relation to athletics, I could have given you one 8 years ago when I first started going to games. Every time we do the "Hey" song, I continue to be embarrassed that the student section for my team uses the fill-in part to demonstrate to the world that they know how to spell Valparaiso. As college sports songs go, that rates a 1 on my cool-meter.
What do I do about it? I simply decline to participate in the spelling bee portion of the song. <shrug>

Last I knew, it was a part of the extended version of the Fight Song. Also, I think the spelling of Valparaiso was supposed to be a way of keeping members of the VUCRU from using the "We're gonna beat the hell out of you" chant?

vu72, I don't care that the mascot doesn't strike fear ... I couldn't care less. Hell, if it really were "comical and light hearted" I'd be thrilled, that's pretty much what a mascot should be. My complaint is that the new costume is an indisputable piece of ****. Absolute garbage, and it makes my university look like a joke -- like some high school or online college. Image is invaluable, perception is reality. We're now projecting an embarassment that makes our distinguished institution look like the cheapest, hokiest school on the planet.
I think it's just the real world to vote with your wallet. If you get crappy service at a restauarant, it's not the cook's fault but you're going to stop going to that establishment anyways and it will affect him. If you get crappy food at a restauarant, it's not the server's fault but you're going to stop going to that establishment anyways and it will affect her. That's why there's supposed to be superiors, supervisors, managers, ADMINISTRATORS who are smart enough and observant enough and caring enough to thwart unprofessional gaffes and prevent absolute garbage from taking place. Just going along numbly sounding the "everything's okay" alarm doesn't do any good. WHEN THERE'S NO PENALTY FOR FAILURE, FAILURE PROLIFERATES.
