There was a lot of space because they backed off him. He walked the ball up the court and kept the dribble going into the front court. There was plenty of time to foul him and they chose not to. To say they didn't have a choice is just not right. Those chose not to, and Brandon Wood scored on back to back possessions. It wasn't hind sight, because I said before any of it happened, "If I was the coach, I'd foul Buggs here." That was not their strategy, but it would have been mine. Doesn't mean I was right or wrong, but I would have done it on back to back possessions.

I was very surprised that a coach with Slocum's experience didn't do that.

Well, since I only saw the second half, I can't comment on how they looked in the first half. That said, I wasn't impressed with how Valpo handled the lead. They don't know how to bury an opponent. Instead of breaking their opponents will and running sets, they would jack up very quick shots and stopped attacking the rim. They clearly aren't comfortable with being in command, and the only way you get better at that is to have a big lead on a regular basis. All told, very unimpressed. *Edit - Somebody from Valpo should send the YSU coach a gift basket. His illogical decision not to foul Buggs and allow BWood to score cost them the game. Even the announcers (at the time) even questioned that decision Glad someone else sees what I see. Yes, they won, after giving up a 19 point lead. But give up a 19-point lead Friday against a good Detroit team and they're done. You can get away with it against the YSUs and UICs of the world.

Doesn't mean I was right or wrong, but I would have done it on back to back possessions. I agree with the strategy, but I think Buggs was very quick to trigger the ball away if and when a defender closed in on him. I would like to think Valpo had a play designed to pull a defender away high to foul him, but they stayed home. I believe this was the only time he had the ball, so unless they could have isolated the ball to Buggs, they couldn't have fouled him on back-to-back possessions. But lets ignore this debate and focus on the result: I was very impressed with his clutch shooting by Wood in that first possession. I was disappointed with his three pointer late (as well as Buggs on the 5-4 with a player injured), but he took over the game, and that's what he needs to do in this post-season. I keep calling this team bipolar, and I think it's an accurate way to describe this year. I know every game goes through streaks and runs, but this team can look unstoppable, especially on defense , at one point, then completely lost and hopeless seconds later. And it really doesn't matter who's on the court. I think YS followed Valpo's early first half run with a 22-8 run, with a 12-0 run in that. Seems like this happens every game.
