Maybe I'm just naive, but I was surprised that beer was sold at the game last night (even in Wisconsin). After all, this is a college game, and three fourths of the students shouldn't be old enough to buy the beer. It certainly didn't seem to do anything to create a better atmosphere or support the supposed goals of interscholastic athletics (the UWM kids who had been drinking and came down to taunt all of us middle-aged Valpo fans reinforced my reaction).
Did anyone else have a similar reaction to the beer sales?

Beer wasn't sold the last time around in Milwaukee and we were all stunned that it was this time. Apparently the HL wanted to buyout the contract for alcohol at the Cell but the buyout was too high for the league to afford.

Pantherholic is right. To buy out the contract was $5100 a night.

I was shocked when I saw a Valpo student (21) with a beer in her hand Friday night. I contemplated buying a beer on Saturday, but decided against it to not make our school look bad in case I was shown on TV yelling or something. I don't think Valpo should ever sell beer at a game (they can't anyways).

What the hell is wrong with somebody who's of age drinking a beer?

The NCAA only regulates beer cannot be sold in on-campus arenas or sports facilities. If the game is held off-campus, such as the Cell, United Center, Conseco Fieldhouse, or other facilities not on either school's campus, beer sales are legal. The conference has the ability to work out a contract with the facilities to not sell beer, but in this case, apparently the conference considered it, looked at the costs, and decided they didn't want to spend $15,000+ to stop beer from being sold at U.S. Cellular Arena. At an off-campus facility, I'm all for beer sales. I mean if fans want to spend money to enjoy a game or two off-campus, then they should have the ability to enjoy a couple of beers too, as long as they are 21. The HL could have enforced a rule with the arena security and staff that any fans who are 21 or older, and would like to drink at the game, have to show a specific employee at the entrances their ID, and get a wristband that proves they are of age, and legally allowed to drink. Without the wristband, either they get NO BEER, or are subject to arrest.
As long as no one was unruly about their beer consumption at the game, no worries, in my opinion.

Where is it written that people at sporting events *are required* to drink beer? You think it's okay to drink beer at games, that's fine. Someone else thinks it's okay to abstain, that's mock-worthy? ? Please.

As long as no one was unruly about their beer consumption at the game, no worries, in my opinion. As I noted, there were some unruly drinking fans who dropped in to taunt Crusader fans. It only takes a few to make an ugly situation. I guess my thinking goes like this. Over the years there have been many complaints registered on this board of fans who went over the line in their, shall we say, enthusiasm. Here's an idea, let's add alcohol.

Maybe I'm just naive, but I was surprised that beer was sold at the game last night (even in Wisconsin). The only ones that are naive are those that think that alcohol was only consumed last night by those 21 years and older. I heard from a very reliable source that beer was being bought by students over 21 and passed many times to those under 21. Had one of these kids gotten in a tragic car accident on their way home and killed or maimed a few innocent people, that $5000 the HL saved by not buying out the beer contract would be chicken feed compared to the millions they are anyone else associated with the decision potentially would be paying out in liability claims. What a ridiculously short-sighted decision. And I'm not coming from the position of a "prude." People need to think beyond the end of their beer cups.

I don't think amusedspectator and I were saying people must or even should drink beer, we were responding to the assertion that it might make Valpo look bad because a fan was drinking beer. That is ridiculous. If you don't want to drink, don't drink, but to say you didn't drink because you were concerned about what people might think of Valpo is silly.

maybe I'm just old but I was shocked by the level of the taunting last night. It is tough to sit through it and stay classy but I think for the most part we pulled it off.
I think the beer just escalates bad behavior. I think a lot of what happened, would have happened sober, maybe just not to the extent it did.
I think it was a milwaukee fan that came in here after the last game saying 2 of the 3 a****** chants were justified. uh.. wow.
again I guess I'm old, but if I am a sponsor / alum, do I want to support that?

I stand by my decision to not drink a beer because I was in a very visible spot (literally first row sitting under the basket) and I was yelling at the refs (like everyone else). If I was tucked away in the 300's level, that would be a different story. Like I said, I didn't want to get seen on TV with a beer and Valpo shirt yelling at a ref or something like that. I don't need a beer to enjoy a game. Honestly, I don't think many Milwaukee fans can say the same thing after last night. There was enough beer in that student section fill a swimming pool.
If there's one thing that I despise, it's drunken idiots irrationally yelling at a sporting event. Not good yelling, but yelling "a**hole" when the foul ratio is over 2:1 or taunting opposing player's mothers. I don't want to get lumped in with that, so I should never be criticized for my decision to not drink.
