Oh, I'm aware of the late 80s as well. They were playing Division II, which I believe had a 48-scholarship limit at that time. I think Valpo had 24 scholarships that they divided up to field a team. That was the beginning of three-year winless streak that coincided with the end of Koch/beginning of Tom Horne. I like your suggestions. I have no doubt the players are trying as hard as they can. Now there is something I did not know. I didn't realize that VU was giving half as many scholarships as they were allowed and likely half as many as everybody else they were playing. Gee, I wonder why they had the results they did. I too think the kids are trying as hard as they can, but that may not be enough at this point for various reason.

Well, let's get involved. If lack of effort isn't the problem then it must be lack of talent, lack of coaching, lack of commitment, lack of facillities, lack of a winning history, lack of fan and student support and just a "who gives a damn attitude. DROP FOOTBALL! Can't get more involved that that. Volleyball forever! jj, I know that I have said this before, but having been involved with a university that dropped football (that was in the PFL) it is not a pretty site. We would all be reading posts like these when there is some glimmer of hope in bringing the sport back to campus. Lets change the mantra from "drop football" to "fix football"

I think everyone on this board knows where the changes to start fixing football should begin. The questions most of us have on our mind are when will the changes start, and what will the first change be?

Well, please don't take this post as some sort of defense of the program. clearly there are issues at many levels.
Nonetheless, please keep these facts in mind. We lost a starting quarterback before the season ever started. But forget that, let's take a moment and compare the crusaders to the Indy Colts! Yep, that's correct.
So the mighty undefeated Colts happen to have the same bad luck as the Crusaders in the injury department. Here is what you have, and no doubt I've forgotten about some of the injuries. Anyway here goes:
At quarterback, Peyton Manning and his backup Jim Sorgi are out. The starter is Curtis Painter.
At running back, Joseph Addai and Donald Brown are out. Your starters are Chad Simpson and Mike Hart.
At defensive end, Robert Mathis is also out.
I'll stop there. Get the picture? Would the Colts have won any games? Maybe their ecord would be 1-6 (sound firmiliar?, instead of 7-0
Just trying to put it in perspective.

Dayton converted a wide receiver to QB in the second week of the season, after their first two (or even 3) guys went down with an injury. They haven't lost since then. Just saying.

last year we had a senior loaded squad with many talented players and lost so what was the excuse then?

How can we 'lose' a QB that never played a down for VU? In the pros I could understand trading for or signing a free agent, then never having that QB, but this is college. If he had been a starter last year, different story.

If he had been a starter last year, different story. Not sure how else to describe it. The kid was very talented and was going to be our starter by all accounts. He was a student at Valpo and played spring ball. Because his wife couldn't find a job he was forced to leave school. That is how we can lose a QB that never played a down for VU. As for what the excuse was last year, I don't know of any. No doubt, given we had 19 starters returning, the result last year was worse than this year. My comentary on the rash of injuries concerned this year only. Look, the head coach is not a relative. As 89 pointed out, this is as bad as it has been since the 80's. Something needs to change. One good thing about this awful football year is that we are talking about football. If we were a middle of the pack team we probably would be less likely to be having the discussion.

Also, the Colts are limited to a 53 man roster, exactly how many players are on the VU football team? I get what you are saying, but it doesn't exactly work that way.
