"NO Earmarks when I become president" He "didn't have time" to keep his promises this time around. Next time he'll look at the earmarks he said......right.

i think the general message is not to trust politicians period To expect politicians to be apolitical is to live in fantasy land. I think politics is a lot more complex than that. "Mr. Smith goes to Washington" is a nice story for fiction, but I'm not sure the country would be in better shape in real life. I have no problem with poking our new President or any politician when they seem to renege on a campaign promise. Political candidates know this is part of the deal. I think to suggest that all politicians lie every single second of every single day is overly cynical. There are occasions when it is their duty to lie, by the way, though that probably doesn't apply to this particular discussion. However, I also understand that our country has bought itself this kind of cynical reaction by it's past behavior. It does get harder and harder to trust any of them, for sure, just as it has gotten harder and harder for those of us who aren't really plugged in to the recruiting field to get excited about any Valpo recruit that is coming down the pike, no matter how many superlatives are attached to his name. We've been burned before. Of course, as I tried to point out indirectly when I was trying to explain td's viewpoint to koala, we should at least admit that we are in effect judging all new recruits for the faults of past recruits which is unfair. It's unfair, but we can't help it. Same with politicians. I think politics is not quite as nefarious as we make it out to be. In fact, politics with it's deal-making, vote-trading, warts and all, is actually necessary where flawed beings such as humans are involved (as Mr. Spock might say).
