A very classy way to step down. He has been part of the program since 1991--a very long time. I had forgotten that we won (or shared) a championship in 2000 as well as winning the whole thing in 2003. That's 2 in 9 years, hardly reason to drop football!! I wish Coach Adams and his family all the best, and God's blessings on his new journey.

I agree with many people it is sad situation when someone loses there job, but like Adams' said he did not meet his goals nor the University's goals. He did do a lot for the program but I am very excited to see how this program will turn the corner. KEEP FOOTBALL~

I wish the best for Stacy Adams and his staff. They recruited my son and were always fair and honest with him. My son has learned some great life lessons under their watch. As a parent, that's all you really hope for. We'll miss them.
What happens next?

It will be interesting to see what direction the program takes....and who applies for the job. I would guess there will be more candidates than we might imagine. No matter what you personally think, the label is Divsion I and that counts on a resume....good luck to Stacy and his family. He's always been a class act and I'm very sorry it hasn't worked out for him

Adams resigns as VU's football coach AD says national search for a replacement will begin immediately Story Discussion BY PAUL JANKOWSKI - Times Correspondent Posted: Monday, November 30, 2009 12:00 am VALPARAISO | A five-year record of 15-40 didn't cut it for Stacy Adams. Adams, a Gary native and 1984 Lew Wallace graduate, resigned as Valparaiso University's football coach last week. The announcement was made Sunday night by VU athletic director Mark LaBarbera. "We evaluated where we're at as a football program, and we came to the conclusion that it would be best if he stepped down," LaBarbera said. The Crusaders finished this season 1-10, including 0-8 in the Pioneer Football League. VU won just six PFL games during Adams' tenure, which started with the 2005 season after former coach Tom Horne abruptly resigned a couple weeks before training camp began. LaBarbera said he and Adams came to the decision together in a postseason evaluation meeting while students were on Thanksgiving break. Adams met with VU players at 7 p.m. Sunday. School officials didn't want to make the announcement until the players were informed upon returning from break. This season's team was outscored 344-121. The Crusaders were outgained in yardage 4,186-2,496, an average of 380.5 to 226.9. The team was hit hard by injuries, first to starting quarterback Matt Upshaw in a season-opening loss at Saint Joseph's College. Veteran running backs Ross Wiemer and John Popper were also knocked out for the season by injuries, and several other key players missed a lot of action. "Injuries made it more difficult for us," LaBarbera said. "But this is not about one or two games. It's more about where we've been in the last five years. Stacy and I talked about that." VU's only victory this season was a 20-17 win at Carthage (Wis.), a Division III program, in the second game of the year. The Crusaders lost their last eight games, including a 29-6 defeat against Morehead State in what ended up being Adams' last game on Nov. 21. Adams only commented in a press release sent out by the school. He did not immediately return a message for comment Sunday evening. "I certainly did not meet my own, nor the university's expectations as head coach," Adams stated. "If I can't do that, then I want to allow someone else the opportunity to do so." LaBarbera said, at this time, Adams' staff that includes four full-time assistants are still employed. A national search for a new head coach will begin immediately, and the new coach would assemble his own staff. Despite VU's record, LaBarbera stressed Adams did a good job in other areas. "In a lot of ways away from the field, Stacy has done a good job such as player retention and making sure they perform well in the classroom," LaBarbera said. "But at 15-40 and six conference wins, the program should be performing better than that." On VU's final two-deep roster for its game against Morehead State, only eight players were in their final year of eligibility. "I greatly appreciate the opportunity the university gave me for helping me achieve my dream of being a Division I head football coach," said Adams, who has been at VU since 1991. "The next person that takes over the program will inherit an experienced team."

That's good to know. I wondered how Valpo was going to handle that. Is Sam Bernardi, Associate Head Coach/Defensive & Recruiting Coordinator, included in the group who will stay for the time being?? Someone overseeing the off-season workouts without missing a beat is a good thing!

I would assume that Bernardi would be a candidate for the head job...although they may want to look outisde the program. I know that some of the high schools around the area are interested in having him with them, so I don't think Sam will be without work either way

GI JJ, I'm pretty sure I heard Valpo's new president say he really likes and appreciates football, as does most of the US population! Get with the program! Go Crusaders! :popcorn

Here are the four coaches being kept on and the possible top new hires for head coach...
FootballCoachScoop was the FIRST TO REPORT (October 27) that Head Football Coach Stacy Adams would not be retained. According to our sources now, Athletic Director Mark LaBarbera is very interested in Ted Karras Jr. (Marian College Head Coach), Erik Raeburn (Wabash Head Coach), Kevin Donley (Saint Francis-Fort Wayne Head Coach), Lou Esposito (Saint Joseph's Head Coach) and Steve Englehart (Rose-Hulman Head Coach). We have also been told all four current full-time assistants: Associate Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator Sam Bernardi, Special Teams coach Robert Lee and Offensive coaches Chip Taylor and Josh Wissing, will remain on staff until a new head coach is hired.
