Just got an email from the University saying that Theta Chi's are kicked off campus for a serious hazing incident last spring when they were already on probation. The ban could be up to 10 years but can be reduced if the national shows a serious effort to recolonize the house. We went through this at the Phi Psi house about 20 years ago. The OX's can recover but it will be tough. Sorry jj.

This has been common knowledge to students on campus since the spring, so it's nice to see some official news. It's about time Theta Chi received some punishment for their years of tortuous and irresponsible hazing, but at the same time it is still sad to see a greek organization leave campus. I hope Theta Chi returns as a viable fraternity in less than 10 years.

I didn't know that dunking for apples causes numerous near-death experiences for pledges. Also, what is "triumphet"?

Is Theta Chi the fraternity that has a lot of football players?

triumphant? Damn if I know. Near death experience, like being in combat? Give me a break. Football players? Yeah, when I was there in the early 50's. Now? I don't know.

I believe our typhoon is suggesting that you don't know what you are talking about with respect to the latest incidents. Sounds to me like "bobbing for apples" is not what passes for hazing these days, according to him. I myself have no knowledge of any of this. Just reading between the lines and trying to help.

I'm guessing there is much more involved than simply bobbing for apples.....

Literally there were broken bones and near-death experiences by pledges in the past two years. And yes, football players are the stereotypical Theta Chi members now and have been for the past few years as far as I know.

Isn't this the 2nd predominately football player fraternity to be ousted from the Valpo campus?

Don't really know where the football team lives. Back in my day athletes were pretty much at the Phi Delt, Phi Psi or Theta Chi houses. Of course the Phi Delts bit the dust last year and now the OX house.
Some of the coaches discourage/ban players from joining frat houses. I know basketball is this way as is soccer. Not sure what the objection is although membership may be viewed as a distraction against the focus needed to play at the D1 level. I wonder if women's coaches have the same opinion about sororities.

Is Theta Chi the fraternity that has a lot of football players? When I was in school, it was mainly baseball players actually. Valporun can probably attest to this, since he was in the same time period. Phi Delt was the football fraternity then, so maybe it has changed. I know back then as well, Theta Chi got in major trouble for some bad things, and it was well known to not bring your girlfriend/date there and lose sight of her...seriously.

About ten years ago, Theta Chi was the baseball frat, and Phi Delts was football. I don't know that it is true at Valpo, as I wasn't in a frat, but it seems like too many of the frat issues are ones we've all seen depicted in Hollywood movies, doesn't matter what era the movie was from, but it seems to have made its way to Valpo.

From my experience, the majority of football players that were in a frat were in Phi Delt. Once they got shut down, the majority of football players that were in a frat were in Theta Chi. To be completely honest, I'm glad both of them got shut down. Good riddance! Both fraternities' members acted like complete and total jackasses pretty much constantly (obviously there are some exceptions . . . but not many).
Another thing along these lines is student support for the football team. I know, for me, a big reason of why I didn't go to any games/support the football team is because most of the people I knew from the team acted like morons all the time and were completely insufferable. Nothing about their behavior would make their fellow classmates want to come out and support them. Like I said before, there are some very large exceptions to this generalization.
