Valpo now 7th in the region and ahead of Notre Dame, Indiana and Michigan! Very impressive. Still, one major hurdle to get to the NCAAs--Butler is ranked 3rd!!!

Winning the conference tournament is not requisite to make the NCAA Tournament in men's soccer. Milwaukee, Butler, UIC and Green Bay have all picked up at-large bids this decade.

Soccer goes 1-1 on the weekend in league play. 6-1-1 overall. Butler next. Go Valpo!

Another Valpo loss late in the game. When you lose the big games late, it's all on the coach. So coach....... ??

It must be tough when your son or friend doesn't play as much as you hope he would Nicky, but to blame this on coach is ridiculous. You might not remember when we were the joke of d1 soccer, but I remember. This team is finally where I hoped it could be because of our coaches. To suggest they are to blame in a 1 0 loss, on the road, in a game VU dominated sounds like sour grapes over something personal. Did you watch the game? I did on the HL network and we looked good.

You make a convincing point KK, we should be content with the mediocrity. We are no longer bad, yea team! This is where you hoped the team would be? Excuse me for having higer expectations. I watched the game and have seen better HS games. Kickball is not soccer. You've been glamoured KK. Heck, we all love the coach, he is a nice guy and the players like him. But I just don't see it. Our only hope at a goal is a PK or a set play. Not my idea of soccer.

Oh do tell us you "idea of soccer" because I am sure it is highly qualified and learned over decades of playing and coaching experience. Be sure to include which players should be playing in your enlightened view so we can figure out exactly where the axe being ground stems from. I may be content with where the team is now because I think they are better than mediocre. I can bet the house that nobody from the well liked coach on down through the players is content. Piling on after a hard game will probably help, so good job Nicky! Keep pulling your weight.

Your right KK, the team is better than mediocre. So why then don't you agree that it's leadership that makes a good team mediocre? Or perhaps it was just unlucky? But then be careful if you call a loss unlucky, then were the previous wins just lucky? This is a "season of discontent", that is obvious. My idea of soccer is simple. Score goals. You win when you score goals. Not piling on the players, KK. Just the coach.

I'd want to know the shots on goal more than the actual goals. Sometimes you can dominate a game and run into a hot goaltender or the shots just aren't falling. If you put shots on the net, only good things can happen. I haven't seen Valpo play lately, so I can't really say if they're getting off enough shots or not.

Another OT loss.... Spin it anyway you want, coach. Can't win if you don't score.

OT loss to the 16th ranked team in the nation, THE Ohio State, in Columbus. No argument that you can't win if you don't score. If any sport in VU athletic department went to overtime with two of the top ranked teams in the country like soccer has done in the past few weeks, there'd be celebrations. Scratching my head.
For those new here, Nicky doesn't like the coach (probably because his nephew or son doesn't play - just conjecture on my part) so he thinks Valpo losing at #16 Ohio State in overtime is a coaching issue. As a proud soccer alum I couldn't disagree with him more.
Reading the boards I think Valpo has other pressing athletic issues and soccer isn't one of them.

Maybe I'm reading in mor than you had in mind. Now that men's soccer is playing at Brown Field, I doubt that any in the Horizon have as much seating or any better field, let alone lighting. As far as coaching is concerned, recruiting is a big part of it and I doubt Nicky would say we don't have the talent. I'm tired of "oh so close" also. It is time for a Valpo team to knock off a big dog.

FWIW I saw the game live yesterday. My son played at Valpo before Coach Avery arrived and we both still follow closely. I try to see them play whenever they are in Ohio and my schedule permits. My son tells me every time we talk about the team how much he would have liked playing now. He had a frustrating soccer experience but loved Valpo and stlll does.
The only problem I see from my limited point of view is that the expectations surrounding the team are very high and the team has had difficulty meeting them this season. Nobody ever cared enough about soccer before to post on line about it and now we have parents, alums, and fans following. Coach has created this following so I am sure he doesn't mind the hand wringing now when the team doesn't win every game.
Last point from me...I know the OSU coach and talked to him after the game. He was VERY complimentary of Valpo. He said he wished his own team played as hard for each other. Very organized (which speaks to coaching) and very committed. He is a well respected coach in college soccer and thinks the world of what our coach is doing in what he called "a difficult situation". He thinks Valpo will be lucky to hang on to its coach - I do too.
Go Valpo!
