What's next? Here's the recap... Getting annihilated by a team in your own conference by 79 points! Getting destroyed by a DIII school 42-7 Losing to D2 team that was starting a wide receiver a quarterback 50-7 Here are the statistical rankings before the 86-7 debacle. Keep in mind this is out of 117 teams Total offense - 115 Scoring offense - 117 Rushing offense - 117 Passing offense - 87 Total defense - 116 Scoring defense - 116 Rushing defense - 116 Passing defense - 66 Look, I get this is a new coach, with a new "system", but I haven't seen one positive thing from this team this year. Not one! Coach Carson might be the second coming of Joe Paterno and in three years I will eat my words, but from what I've seen so far... I fully expect Valpo to be last in scoring offense AND last in scoring defense on Monday when the stats are updated. That's pretty tough to do, be the worst team on both sides of the ball. Did ever player who was any good graduate or quit? Is the talent level that bad they aren't competitive against anybody. Maybe Stacy Adams did a better job then we thought if there's this little talent? I don't know. Where is this team going? Who in their right mind would want to play here right now? What is there to point to for improvement or to show new recruits what direction your headed? They've been in one game all year, all the rest have been abominations. If somebody could tell me what's going on here, I'd love to hear it. If the answer is the "system" response, I'll scream. There's no system that allows you to lose by an average score of 49-9. If there is, maybe they need to adapt to the talent they have, not the talent they want. I really want this to get better, so give me something to point to.

While I didn't expect things to get better right away with a new coach, I didn't expect them to get worse! I'm not for dropping football, but something has to be done, and quick.

I think the VU football coach should have the following... 1) Be from Chicago to form some sort of pipeline (I am not a Chicago person). This seems to me to be the way to get good local players to come. Most teams at our level have a local pipeline - they do ot recruit nationally or try to get "all the good Lutheran players" across the US" 2) Not have the word "Concordia" on his resume (this is the first thing I look for for all VU hires at all levels of the administration). But we do have new posters hanging in the old gym .

I can understand the pipeline to Chicago, keep some local recruits around, although the coaches need to really watch the Chicago situations because of the conference a player comes from. They could be coming from a conference where their school could dominate other teams in the first half, so that the starters were pulled early in the second half.
Also, I don't see the difference in if he's from the Concordia system either. I think that's just a sign of you being arrogant? If you really have a problem with the Concordias, why are you associated with Valpo or Lutheranism? Coach Carlson just needs to adjust who plays, maybe how long they play, and what position they play, but once he has more of his own recruits in with a winning mentality, that will change this program immensely.

Thanks for calling me arrogant. I guess I am as arrogant as other typical MS Lutherans who went to Valpo. Look, the Concordia comment is just an indicator to me how much VU "looked outside the box" for any hire. I apologize if it offended anyone too much. While it was intended to be sarcastic it also has merit - and seems to hit a nerve here (giving it even more merit). If someone has "Concordia" on his resume it is just an indicator that the person fits the "typical" Valpo mode. If you spend your life growing up MS Lutheran and going to VU it makes sense. As for the Chicago, NWI pipeline...look at the rosters of the good teams we play. They have mostly local players that view the opportunity to play at the local school a plus - see Anderson, Dayton, Butler, J'ville, etc. This is most certainly true.

32 is absolutely correct in terms of recruiting. The only teams that do a lot of recruiting outside of their geographic area are the FBS schools, generally speaking. An exception in FCS is the Ivy League, for obvious reaons. This is based on conversations I have had with some FCS coaches, as well as just looking at rosters.

I mean we really don't need to go to Chicago yet. Valpo HS would be more competitive than the current team of bums VU throws out there.

I attended both Concordia Mequon and Valparaiso for undergrad and now I teach at VU. I can tell you from my personal experience that there are many more differences between the two schools than there are similarities. I often laugh at people who try to compare the two schools despite having no experience of both.
I don't want this to sound derogatory towards VU in terms of religious experience, but everywhere you went at Concordia, there was a "religious" feel that is not always existent at Valparaiso. In terms of athletics, I can remember a Lutheran flag flying in the gym at Concordia. No such flag hangs at the ARC. Is this a good thing? A bad thing? Hell, I don't care. I'm Methodist!!!

Valpo 10: The football team is not made up of bums. They are student athletes that deserve the respect from this board for representing their school every week, executing the game plan prepared by their coaches. Most of these young men are hard working and want to win probably more than most other athletes on campus. They accepted Coach Carlson's "system" last spring, and many worked hard over the summer to prepare for this season.

I'm sorry, but I (and probably many others) don't find our football players to be good representatives of this university. I also highly doubt they care about representing it either. It would be different if they lost 30-7 or maybe 50-7. BUT C'MON, if these "athletes" were working their tails off they wouldn't have been stomped 86-7 (which they should be thankful it wasn't worse), no matter how bad they are. Its just an embarrassment towards this institution. You want to see kids that want to represent their university and work hard, just watch the Wisc/OSU game. Those Wisconsin kids are exhibit A. While you watch that though, you might see Valpo at the bottom line losing to Jacksonville 86-7. One more thing. They just aren't going to get my respect because they are student-athletes or because they play football. Show me a reason to respect them. 86-7 is going in the wrong direction.

I'd agree they aren't bums, they are students at Valparaiso University and that in and of itself deserves some amount of respect. However, I don't think that was the point of the post. When you have the results Valpo's having, there's clearly a problem. Maybe the problem is the talent or maybe it's the coaching, who knows it's probably both. When I watched the first quarter of that game, it was clear that Valpo didn't have the talent to be in that game, and even if you switched coaches, the results would have likely been the same. That being said, I don't think the coaches at Valpo have done anything to help the situation and have put the athletes in a position where they don't have a chance to succeed. And since you brought up the working hard, and wanting to win more than most athletes, I have to comment on it. That's nice and all, but they're still getting humiliated on the field. I can work really hard to be a ballet dancer, but i am still going to suck at it because I don't have that ability. Keep in mind this isn't just a bad team, but statistically the WORST team in all of D1 football and it isn't even close. Absolute dead last in scoring defense and absolute dead last in scoring offense. I actually feel bad for the kids on the field, since they have to suffer through being the laughingstock of the university. My guess is most of them shouldn't really be playing D1 football, non scholarship or not. But there they are trotting out onto the field, getting it handed to them week in week out. I think it's pretty safe to say there's more than one person here who thinks they would lose to Valpo High School. I know they couldn't win the Duneland. And that's where we are, Valpo has a D1 football team that can't beat anybody and is worse than the local high school. The big question is how this will hurt recruiting for next year. Having 86-7 roll across the ticker can't help.

I got an idea lets have them play East Chicago. Now that would be interesting. Adams versus Carlson.
