If we play this way against Wright State on Friday... something is wrong... we're playing Detroit at about 7:30... Wright State has the 5pm (CT) game with Cleveland State...

well that was more than a little nervewracking. i hate seeing a 19 point lead evaporate to 3...what's wrong with a good old fashioned beatdown every once in a while? we play like this on friday ... and we're screwed... sadly, i don't hold out much hope for that game. We shouldn't be surprised that YSU displayed some mental toughness last night, and that the game was closer than some would have liked. Keep in mind that Youngstown St. was playing much better in the month of February. While they were 2-6 for the month, one of their wins was against Butler and they also had overtime losses to Milwaukee and Valpo, and a four point loss at Wright State. This might have been the best #9 seed in some time. What I liked about the team last night is that they displayed more energy and more confidence -- they played like they were a team that was supposed to win, knew they could win, and hit the shots they needed to when it counted.

Yet they still hit a scoring dry spell late in the 2nd half that normally would have cost them the game if they hadn't been up by 19 in the early part of the 2nd half. Let's hope the Crusaders avoid this kind of scoring drought against Detroit or they will surely lose. This was the same kind of scoring dry spell they had against Green Bay at home that cost them their first home conference loss. The good thing is that this is a neutral court game and I believe Valpo will have the advantage in this game due to having the ability to play better as a team.

There were stretches last night where Valpo looked absolutely lost. Like my 10 year old son's team could've played them competitively. But when they came back from 10 down and then built that 19 point lead, they looked unbeatable. I don't think Homer instills in his players a killer instinct. I don't think he likes it when his teams win big. They never seem able or willing to put their foot on the throat of their opponent. And that's a killer. I think he's too nice.

Was Homer "too nice" en route to multiple NCAA tourney appearances and 600+ wins?

Valpo is a good team guys. They can beat anyone in the conference. Homer will get them ready!

You realize the same thing happened to Cleveland State last night against a supposed awful team in UIC. Tournament time does strange things to allegedly "bad" teams. CSU was up 20 before UIC cut the deficit to 3 at one point. CSU held on too and they're one of the teams that could dominate. I think you tip your cap to the effort YSU brought to what was going to be their final game if they lost.

I'm sure you have a good reason but you can't assume others will instinctively know what you mean. Please explain. I'm sure you have a reason.

Well, since I only saw the second half, I can't comment on how they looked in the first half. That said, I wasn't impressed with how Valpo handled the lead. They don't know how to bury an opponent. Instead of breaking their opponents will and running sets, they would jack up very quick shots and stopped attacking the rim. They clearly aren't comfortable with being in command, and the only way you get better at that is to have a big lead on a regular basis. All told, very unimpressed. *Edit - Somebody from Valpo should send the YSU coach a gift basket. His illogical decision not to foul Buggs and allow BWood to score cost them the game. Even the announcers (at the time) even questioned that decision

i'm not bashing ysu - they showed a lot of toughness in fighting back. and yes, eguins, you're right it did get down to 1. i didn't mean to shortchange things.
my problem is merely that we had the game in the bag. granted i didn't watch the game, so i don't know what the reason was for the gap closing. but if it was reminiscent of earlier games, then there's a problem with that. in the end, did we win? yes. and as the saying goes, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. but if these types of games do not get used as a learning opportunity (for BOTH the players and coaches), then somebody somewhere isn't doing their job.

I am always trying to tap into my inner child...secondly, if you think Homer really doesn't want to win games by big margins you must be drunk. He would love to will every game by 20....he would not run the score up on someone just to appease some fans, but winning easily, of course he wants to....

It's a lot easier to win by 20 if you're up 35. Don't take your foot off the gas until there's absolutely no chance they're even in the game. Then you play your walk on's in the final 4 minutes and make the score reasonable in the end.

Even the announcers (at the time) even questioned that decision The announcers kept harping on this, but they really didn't have an opportunity to foul Buggs. He had the ball once, but with a lot of space and he dished the ball off before he was close to anyone.
