Really, no arguments on this end for the league awards. Cole and Jeter clearly deserved their honors. McCammon provided the biggest offensive spark off the bench for any team consistently all year. I thought the Newcomer award was between McCallum and Paul Carter and Carter still made the newcomer team.
I thought Robo Kreps could have been a 2nd-team player but then again, you could've easily created a Horizon League 3rd team considering how many great players there were this year.

i really don't have any problems with the first team selections, POY or COY. I do have a couple of problems with second team and defensive team, but nothing all that serious. All in all, for the first time ever I think the voting was pretty good.

Anybody think if Paul Carter wasn't on a 2-16 team, he'd have made the second team? Should an individual be penalized for an individual honor because he's on a bad team? Is there any question that Carter is one of the top ten players in the league?

I don't think there's any question he is one of the better players in the league...I sometimes wonder who tallies the votes on these things since you can't vote for your own or the team you cover....but as I said, this year I have less problems with it than I've had some years

You can vote for players on the team you cover, but coaches cannot vote for their own players.

Should an individual be penalized for an individual honor because he's on a bad team? Absolutely not. That's my opinion, regardless of the sport, and I'm sticking to it. It amazes me that so many intelligent people in MLB routinely and matter-of-factly disqualify players on teams that don't make the postseason (and they're not even consistent -- Andre Dawson, anyone?). The only way it can possibly make sense is if in a particular sport you can't adequately evaluate individual players without some sort of team context. This is certainly not the case in baseball, but I suppose it might be in basketball.

Is there any question that Carter is one of the top ten players in the league? I think it is more than fair to say that if Paul Carter's sister didn't have cancer, which allowed his transfer without a sit out year, that UIC would have been beyond awful. With him they were competitive and, as all of us know, allowed them to get the top non-conference win of the year in the Horizon League. I'll say this, if, Carter had picked Valpo instead of UIC, that we would have been a top 25 team and easily (that might be a bit strong) would have won the conference. Obviously, that same thing could be said of several teams. Overall, I like the awards and think they were fair, as opposed to last year. Clearly, success as a team has its relationship to awards for individuals, and that is as it should be. Otherwise, a kid like Watson, from UMKC, woud get all the awards, which he may have received, but clearly didn't deserve. Cory didn't have the kind of year he had last year, and as a result didn't make it to second team (last year he should have been first ). Our team plays as a team better than most if not all of the conference. As a result, individuals, awards may slip to others.

ghostofdylan and I have been clamoring for the Horizon League to add an all-conference Third Team ever since you guys joined the conference.
It just makes sense. Could you not come up with a third team AND honorable mention this season?
