Mr. Labarbara: First, thank you very much for taking the time out of your schedule to answer the questions posed on this board. My questions concern the feasibility of resurrecting golf as a varsity sport at Valparaiso. A poster on the main board was inquiring as to the reasons why at present VU does not have either a men’s or women’s golf team. Can you opine as to those reasons and perhaps give us an indication of the likelihood of the resurrection of golf as a varsity sport in the future, now that the University will be joining the Horizon league? Also, what considerations would Title IX play in the determination of whether the men’s golf program could be resurrected? Would you be able to further elaborate on what effect, if any, the 2005 revised Title IX Federal compliance guidelines involving web or e-mail surveys would have on the University’s ability to sanction men’s golf as a varsity sport in future years?

It is my understand that the golf programs were phased out due to scheduling issues. We currently do not have plans to restart the programs. I can see a time where we might review the issues associated with restarting the programs once the transition to the Horizon League has been completed. Title IX would come into play in that we would likely have to bring back both men's and women's golf if we did anything. I don't think the new compliance guidelines would have any effect on how our decision would be made.
