in reviewing the bio of the new baseball coach - i did not see anything mentioned about him earning a degree. i raised this issue on the message board portion of this site and no one seemed to know for sure. i am assuming that a coach would not be hired at vu unless they had attained at a minimum a four-year baccalaureate degree. thanks for the response

There are a number of things that are important when we are looking for a head coach. Some of those things are specific to certain situations and certain sports. Four items are important to all head coaches. A thorough understanding of their sport, preferably in the context of a winning program. The ability to effectively teach. This applies to their sport and also to the life lessons that come along with striving to succeed in school, in sport, and in life. The ability to effectively advocate for their program. This directly relates to their ability to recruit, to assist in fund raising and in friend raising, and their ability to persuade others on campus to help in improving their program. Integrity. A reputation and history of doing what is right and playing by the rules. Tracy Woodson possess all four of these characteristics and that is why he is our baseball coach. There was a search committee that included a cross section of the University community. They reviewed over 80 applicants and determined the finalist pool. The finalists were all interviewed by representatives from the Athletics Department and the University's administration as well as a committee of faculty. When the end of the interview process was reached Coach Woodson had clearly demonstrated his commitment to the ideals of the University and to the improvement of our baseball program. Coach Woodson was upfront about his undergraduate degree from the first conversation. He committed to finishing his degree from the first conversation. There was no one involved with the search that did not understand his situation and did not feel that he was the right person to lead our baseball program. Coach Woodson has already demonstrated his commitment to the ideals of the University by the manner in which he has run the baseball program since his arrival this summer. We are all looking forward with optimism to the future of our baseball program and to the day in the near future when we can count Coach Woodson among the alumni of Valparaiso University.

I totally support the decision, as my conversations with Tracy have been enjoyable (via email when he first started, and more recently). He is very well-mannered, and has a good drive. Being a recent baseball alumni, it was important for me to reach out to him, and extend a congratulations. He has gone above and beyond to make me aware of any alumni outings/baseball program developments, and I appreciate that, especially with me living so far away in Texas.
Good job ml.

Tracy woodson was given the job 5 or 6 years ago when he toured the campus. Interviewing 80 applicants was only "for face". The only guy who could have gotten the job over him is Tommy Lasorda, his world series coach in the 80's, and coincidentally, a valpo booster. LaBarbara left a pretty obvious paper trail.
