By DUSTIN FRUCCI Special to The Oakland Press
ROCHESTER — The Oakland University men’s basketball team lost to Centenary, 75-66, on Saturday night at the Oakland Athletics Center, prompting OU head coach Greg Kampe to say he has seen a new low for his program.
“This is one of the worst losses we’ve suffered since turning Division I,” Kampe said. “It’s probably the worst loss an OU team has ever suffered at home.”
Turnovers cost OU, as they have all season.
In a game that saw both teams shoot fairly evenly — OU at a 43 percent clip and Centenary at 49 percent — 20 OU turnovers were the difference.
Centenary scored 22 points off OU’s miscues.
“We just don’t value the ball like we should,” Kampe said. “When you shoot like we do, you don’t have a lot of room for error.”
OU trailed 29-25 at halftime, and Centenary forward Chris Watson wouldn’t let the Golden Grizzlies gain any momentum toward a comeback. Every time OU pulled within a basket, Watson answered with one of his own.
Watson finished with 23 points, going 6-for-8 from the field in the second half.
A 12-0 run with 8:23 left in the game gave Centenary (4-14, 2-5 Mid-Con) the margin it needed to get the win. Watson scored six points, and Clarke Jackson had five during that span.
Oakland relied heavily on the 3-point shot to get back in the game, but defensive pressure from the Gents caused a lot of forced shots.
OU ended the game just 4-for-22 from beyond the arc.
Vova Severovas was one of the few bright spots for the Golden Grizzlies, going 8-for-10 from the field and fi nishing with 17 points. Shawn Hopes added 12 points and 10 rebounds for OU.
More than halfway through the season, OU (7-13, 2-6) finds itself just a half game out of last place in the Mid-Con. Western Illinois is 1-6.
Only eight of the nine teams advance to the conference tournament in March, so OU finds itself needing every win it can get at home. They end the season on a threegame road trip.
“We had big expectations going into this season,” Severovas said. “We still have those expectations, we just need to be better.”
OU women top Ladies
ROCHESTER — The Oakland University women’s basketball team proved to be the best group of Ladies on Saturday against Centenary.
Behind 19 points and 11 rebounds by senior guard Anne Hafeli and 19 points by senior guard Jayme Wilson, the Golden Grizzlies recorded a 78-63 home win over the Ladies, their third straight win at the Oakland Activities Center.
OU (7-11, 3-4) shot an even 50 percent for the game (30 for 60) and dominated Centenary on the boards, outrebounding the Ladies 49-22.
The Golden Grizzlies led just 34-28 at halftime but used a 17-5 run in the second half to grab a 71-50 lead with 5:36 remaining. OU shot 70.8 percent (17 of 24) in the second half.
Junior guard Nicole Piggott added 17 points for OU, which has a week off before traveling to Valparaiso on Saturday. Start time is 3:05 p.m.

Post-Tribune staff report
CEDAR CITY, Utah — Shorthanded Valparaiso had another tough night in Mid-Continent Conference play on Saturday night, losing to Southern Utah 73-61.
Dan Oppland had 20 points and eight rebounds for the Crusaders while Ron Howard scored 12 points. Valpo was without Mohamed Kone, who did not travel with the team pending an NCAA investigation, and Jimmie Miles and Shawn Huff, who are ill and injured, respectively.
Coach Homer Drew pointed to free-throw shooting and rebounding as the two main culprits in the loss.
“The big difference is they shot 17 of 21 free throws and we shot 7 of 18 free throws, and some of those were one-and-ones,” he said. “If we make our free throws, we have a chance to take it down to the end.”
The Crusaders (11-6 overall, 4-3 Mid-Con) also were outrebounded 36-32. The 61 points were 20 below their season average. Valpo shot 41 percent from the field and 31 percent from 3-point range.
Southern Utah improved to 5-14, 4-3. The T-Birds led 36-25 at halftime.
Valparaiso will play its fourth straight road game on Thursday at Oakland. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
“We need some practice time to get better, and we will get better,” Drew said.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Unsatisfying blowout for Crusader women--Post Tribune
Jan. 22, 2006
By Steve T. Gorches / Post-Tribune staff writer
VALPARAISO — On the surface, the Valparaiso women looked pretty dominant in another decisive Mid-Con victory.
But you couldn’t tell by the way coach Keith Freeman talked after Valpo’s 77-58 victory over Southern Utah on Saturday afternoon at the Athletics-Recreation Center.
“Sometimes you get rewarded for being crappy,” he said, referring to the way his team played in certain areas. “I guess that’s life, though.”
Offensively, the Crusaders (11-6, 5-1) looked like they recovered from their first conference loss last Monday at Western Illinois with three players leading the scoring with 17 points each.
But Freeman hasn’t won 204 career games at Valparaiso because he accepts mediocrity.
“They had 15 uncontested shots in the game,” he said about Southern Utah’s offense. “I value the game too much to accept that.
“We would have been vastly disappointed if we were playing (conference leader) Western Illinois today. We try to play against the game, not Southern Utah, and they were ready to play today.”
So what did the Crusaders do right to lead to a victory that saw a lead as big as 29?
For one, Valpo was 12-of-13 from the field in the first 14 minutes of the second half.
Another positive was the inside-outside game with juniors Tamra Braun and Carrie Myers both among the trio of 17-point scorers. Betsy Rietema also scored 17.
Braun had 14 points in the first half on 7-of-10 shooting with none of the Thunderbirds (7-11, 0-7) able to stop her without fouling.
“Coach starts off saying to get the ball inside. Once we got that inside presence going, it opens our outside shooters,” Braun said. “Then we can go to either depending on the situation later.”
Myers was her usual deadly self from beyond the 3-point arc with 3-of-5 from that range, all in the second half. The team was 6-of-10 from 3-point range in the second half with twin sisters Launa and Leah Hochstetler getting into the act.
“I liked it when she made that shot,” Myers said with a thumbs-up signal about Leah’s 3-pointer.
The three points Leah scored tied the freshman’s high. That wasn’t the only statistic anomaly that cropped up late in the game as substitutes littered the floor after VU took a 71-42 lead.
In one of her rare appearances, Evva Comans missed her only shot attempt. That was her first miss of the season after going 2-of-2 in seven previous games played.
Mayella Kuikhoven was perfect from the field (4-of-4) in her ninth start after starting the season coming off the bench. She had nine points and two nice assists in the first half to Braun for easy layups.
