Losses could cost Valpo a TV game--Post Tribune

Valparaiso’s men’s basketball team’s recent slide could take it out of the running in landing a television game for next month’s ESPN Bracket Buster.
“Quite frankly, I think we’ve hurt our chances of being on TV by losing our last two games,” Valpo director of athletics Mark LaBarbera said Sunday afternoon via cell phone. “Right now, I think we’ve probably played ourselves out of a TV game.”
The Crusaders (11-6, 4-3 Mid-Continent Conference) had won six straight games before losing at Chicago State on Thursday and at Southern Utah on Saturday.
LaBarbera said he expects to hear from Mid-Con commissioner Tom Douple next week concerning the draw for Bracket Buster, which takes place Feb. 18. The event is 50 games, with 13 of them on TV. Valpo will host one of the games.
“Frankly, if we continued to win, I think we would have had a good chance (of playing on TV),” LaBarbera said.
The Crusaders have played on regional television several times this season, but their Dec. 18 game at Duke (Fox Sports) was the only on national TV.
Valpo has been without three of its top six players — center Mohamed Kone and guards Shawn Huff and Jimmie Miles. Huff broke a bone in his left foot last Monday, Miles has been in and out of the hospital with a viral infection, and Kone has been the subject of an NCAA investigation regarding his travel to Valpo from Florida in September.
LaBarbera said he’s hoping to hear from the NCAA today regarding Kone.
