Valpo is still the second best team in the state behind IU. IU is 12-3, VU 11-6. Notre Dame is next at 10-6, then IUPUI at 11-7. Question ... how much importance is placed on the program's standing among in-state schools?

Not much. Valpo and everyone else plays at a different level than Purdue, IU and Notre Dame.
That's not to say we couldn't beat those teams in any given year. This Valpo team, at full strength, is clearly better than Purdue and probably ND.

I agree on all points. I think, though, that other schools value their reputation among the state's teams. Maybe that's why the Ball States and Notre Dames don't want anything to do with VU.

I disagree. I don't think that the Ball States and Notre Dames could care less about how their record compares to ours, and would scoff at any true comparisons being made.

I think they'd care about our record if they chose to play us and we chose to beat them. On the surface it might not be a big deal to them, but I don't see them agreeing to be placed on our schedule.

I agree with your point there, but from their perspective I don't see the benefit to playing us. Most teams at that level struggle so much with their difficult conferences that they seem to look to schedule either other premiere big conference teams or small teams that have little chance of winning. We are simply a bit too good to fit the latter and obviously we're not the former. Where's the incentive for them?

The main problem is that most of the in-state schools refuse to come to Valpo to play us. Therefore, we don't schedule them at all. We'd love to give Indiana or Notre Dame a 2 for 1, as we have Purdue in the past. Purdue and Indiana State are the only state schools that consistantly has agreed to play us here. The others just flatly refuse to come to the ARC. They only will play us if we come there....we've had this discussion about Butler many times in the past. VU will not and should not agree to only play those teams at their place....Maybe Purdue, IU and Notre Dame would be exceptions sometimes, but certainly not the others
