Women’s basketball: VU falls in last minute--Post Tribune
Jan. 24, 2006

CHICAGO — After a dismal first half offensively against Chicago State, the Valparaiso women’s basketball team woke up for a while.
The Crusaders only scored 13 points in the first 20 minutes, but hung in the contest because of their usual stout defense.
Then after about 19 minutes and 17 seconds of pretty sound basketball, the wheels fell off as Chicago State scored the last eight points to pull out a 53-50 victory.
It’s the second time in four days a Cougars squad has defeated a Valparaiso team on its home court. The VU men lost to Chicago State last Thursday.
Those eight straight points from the Cougars (8-10, 3-4) came in the last 43.7 seconds of the game.
Valparaiso (11-7, 5-2) trailed 19-13 at halftime after shooting a miserable 6-of-24 (25 percent) from the field and being out-rebounded 21-15. That’s uncharacteristic for a squad that has a size advantage on most teams in the Mid-Continent Conference.
“We played hard enough to win, it just didn’t turn out that way,” said Crusaders guard Carrie Myers, who scored a game-high 16 points, 12 of them in the second half in leading the comeback.
“We gave a great effort. Chicago State is a really good team. They have a lot of energy and once they get it going, it’s hard to stop.”
For much of the second half, though, Myers had the most energy on the court.
Her 12 points in the half came consecutively to erase a six-point deficit in a matter of minutes. Besides two of her patented 3-pointers, she drained a pair of mid-range jumpers and even drove to the hoop for a layup.
Then, just for good measure, she added back-to-back assists to Tamra Braun right after the scoring streak.
“I just felt like we had to get things moving, whether it’s me or Tamra or whoever,” she said. “I think that really opened it up for the offense to get going.”
The problem for the Crusaders was that Chicago State was scoring right with them. Once Valparaiso tied the game at 27-27 with 11:45 left, the first tie since 2-2, neither team led by more than five points.
In fact, that was the Crusaders’ lead with 43.7 seconds left when they got a little sloppy.
First, the defense gave up an open 3-pointer to Tina Hill to cut the lead to two with 31.5 left. Then the Cougars fouled right away and Betsy Rietema missed the front end of a one-and-one, her only miss out of five free-throw attempts.
Mayella Kuikhoven committed a loose-ball foul on the rebound, resulting in a free throw made at the other end. But on the miss, Myers lost the rebound out of bounds to give the Cougars the ball back with 28.1.
That was when Ayesha Neasley drove the lane and hit a layup for a 51-50 lead with 16.9 remaining
Valparaiso had a chance to win the game with less than seven seconds left on an inbounds play to Rietema, but she missed badly on a five-foot turnaround jumper.
“We were in position to win the game up five, and it was just a matter of everything that could go bad went bad,” coach Keith Freeman said. “We ran a play that we run on almost every inbounds and we rushed the shot.”
Rietema finished with 14 points, but shot only 5-of-14 from the field.

Women’s basketball: Calumet’s Timberlake shines vs. 'top rival’--Post Tribune
Jan. 24, 2006
By Steve T. Gorches / Post-Tribune staff writer
CHICAGO — Out of all of Valparaiso’s Mid-Con foes, Chicago State is the closest in mileage.
Don’t think that fact isn’t lost on Chandra Timberlake.
The Calumet High School graduate admitted after her Chicago State team beat the Crusaders 53-50 for a second straight time at home that she considers VU one of her biggest games of the season.
“We see Valpo as our top rival,” said Timberlake, who finished with a career-high seven assists on Monday. “It feels good to get a win against a team close to home.”
Timberlake isn’t used to being the leading assist player on her team, let alone for both teams. But Cougars coach Angela Jackson told her before the game that was a possibility.
“Coach told me they would double me,” Timberlake said. “Sometimes they sent three (players). They were coming at me so I just looked to find someone open.”
In addition to the assists, she had nine points and nine rebounds for a solid all-around effort. But she was unhappy about missing three straight free throws in the second half that could have cost her team the game.
“I’m one of the top free-throw shooters on our team,” she said. “It’s not like me to miss three in a row, so I’m glad my teammates picked me up.”
In her junior year, Timberlake has seen her playing time increase, earned a spot in the starting lineup and was named one of two team captains before the season. The other captain is fellow junior Faith Buchanan.
n CLOSE CALLS: Chicago State and Valparaiso are getting used to close games, especially at Jacoby Dickens Center.
Monday was the fifth time in the last six meetings between the schools that the final score was within five or less points.
The loss for VU was the third in four years at Chicago State and fourth in six years. The Crusaders have never lost to the Cougars (13-0) at home.
