Not that it really matters to us VU faithful, but it was also announced last night that IPFW/Fort Wayne, boasting the premier arena in the league, would be making a strong bid to return the basketball tournament to the newly renovated Allen County Memorial Coliseum. Take a good look all you board lurkers from ORU, you may be seeing a lot of this building in the near future.

Wasn't/isn't there a rule that the Mid-Con has, where you cannot hold the basketball tournament on your home court?

You are correct, now that you mention it, it appears that those statements where made a little hastily!!

Maybe the Mid-Con tournament can be hosted by IPFW, and they play it at the ARC :-) j/k

IPFW does not play its home games there - They play on campus (at least according to their schedule), but they do play some of their bigger games there....but I would think they would give that up to host

...we've seen it before - it was full of empty seats, with a couple hundred Valpo fans sprinkled in...
But, I'm sure the Mid-Con in its infinite wisdom will probably eventually put the tournament in Fort Wayne, or Fargo, or some other God-forsaken place, just to give the other teams in the league some presumption of competitive balance. Whatever. I guess continuing to make a profit by holding it one of the largest cities in the league, with an airport, and plenty of hotels and restaurants and things to do, is just ridiculous...

Sad to see the possibility of ever winning another NCAA bid in basketball going away Eaglebackr?? Fargo, Ft. Wayne, & Sioux Falls should be able to host basketball, which means no wins for your precious Silver Eagles!

Let me tell you that NDSU will pack the place. There is very little else to do inFargo and their sports are very important. Valpo played them at the Fargo Dome a couple of years ago--got mugged but the place was packed. Great atmoshere. I suspect South Dakota will have similar followers. These two additions to the Mid-Con are really very good.

...we've seen it before - it was full of empty seats, with a couple hundred Valpo fans sprinkled in... True, but I'm not sure that's a very good example, present circumstances included. When the tournament was located in Fort Wayne, the city really had no connection to the conference, IMO. I think you'd find a much different atmosphere if the tournament was hosted in Fort Wayne now that IPFW has joined the Mid-Con.

Starting with the 2003-2004 season all men's basketball games are played at the Memorial Coliseum unless a scheduling conflict arises with the Komets (Fort Wayne's UHL hockey franchise). In the upcoming season only one men's game will need to be played on campus at the Gates Center. However, many of the women's games are played on campus at the Gates Center.

Since home court advantage is no longer taboo in the Mid-Con given the only and ever de-facto home court advantage ORU enjoyed the last two years and will continue to enjoy until that agreement is no longer binding, Oakland will be bidding for the tourney in the future. Oakland's coach Kampe said as much and told me that if their O-rena is good enough for the NCAA tourney, it ought to be good enough for the Mid-Con tourney. I hope it happens. Do you think there will be a tidal wave of whining from where the "pump-judge" lives? ;-)

The 'O'-Rena did not host the NCAA Tournament---
Those games were hosted by Oakland University and the Mid-Continent Conference, but were played at the Palace of Auburn Hills - Home of the Pistons

I could be wrong but I swear I saw the Oakland floor or at least the Oakland logo. Was that placed on the floor at the Palace? Regardless, Kampe told me Oakland was going to bid for the tourney at the same location they hosted. Edit: I looked it up and you were right. At least some of the other coaches are interested in having the Mid-Con Tournament somewhere else closer to their own universities.

Eaglebacker, I am sure Tulsa is a great city and is a great host for the Mid-Con tourney but Fargo is no two bit town. Fargo has a ton of hotels and has the most restraurants per capita of any city in the nation. Fargo has a metro population of 200,000 and I'm sure the city would support the Mid-Con tourney well. I know Tom Douple was impressed with the Fargodome as a an off campus venue and it seemed like he expected to eventually host a Mid-Con tourney there
