COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- Mike Jones set a school record with nine 3-pointers and scored a career-high 27 points, leading Maryland to a 101-50 rout of Missouri-Kansas City on Wednesday night.
Jones had six 3-pointers in the first half to help the Terrapins (10-2) take a 56-22 lead. The senior guard finished 9-for-13 from beyond the arc, surpassing the school mark of seven 3-pointers in a game, set by Walt Williams in 1992 and matched by Jones last season.
Jones tied the record with his first shot of the second half and set it with 18:56 left. He added another trey with 16:19 to go -- giving him nine straight from long range -- before missing.
His previous career high in points was 25. D.J. Strawberry scored 20 for the Terrapins and James Gist added 14.
Maryland made 17 3-pointers, breaking the school mark of 13 set in 2001 and tied in 2002. The Terrapins attempted a school-record 37 shots from beyond the arc.
Quinton Day led UMKC (3-8) with 17 points. The Kangaroos, who never before faced a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference, have lost five straight and eight of nine.
Maryland entered the game having dropped two of three, including its ACC opener against Boston College on Sunday. Terrapins coach Gary Williams shook up his starting lineup, giving freshman Greivis Vasquez his first start and placing junior college transfer Bambale Osby in the front court ahead of senior Ekene Ibekwe.
Osby gave the Terps a lead they never relinquished by opening the scoring with a dunk. He finished with five points; Vasquez contributed eight assists and six rebounds.
UMKC missed its initial four shots while Maryland took a 6-0 lead. Minutes later, Jones hit his first 3-pointer of the night to spark an 8-0 spurt that made it 14-4.
It was 24-13 before Jones connected twice from long range within a 22-second span to begin a 15-0 run that put Maryland up 39-13. Freshman Eric Hayes and senior Parrish Brown fueled the onslaught with 3-pointers, and seldom-used Dave Neal contributed a layup.
Over the first 12 minutes, the Kangaroos missed 16 of 21 field-goal tries and committed three turnovers.
After Dominique Johnson ended the Maryland run with a 3-pointer, the Terrapins scored 17 straight points to make it 56-16.
