Miles eager to get back into Valparaiso’s mix--Post Tribune
Jan. 25, 2006

Don’t mention the words “Spinal Tap” to Valparaiso junior guard Jimmie Miles.
Miles, who had a spinal tap last week, never wants another one.
“It’s the worst feeling ever,” Miles said. “That’s worse than getting shot. It makes you feel weak, and you don’t want to do anything.”
For two weeks, Miles was in and out of Porter hospital since developing what Crusaders coach Homer Drew called a viral infection. Miles, who started six of VU’s first 11 games, has missed the last six and will miss Thursday’s game at Oakland.
The Crusaders (11-6, 4-3 Mid-Continent Conference) also could be without center Mohamed Kone, who continues to be the subject of an NCAA investigation involving his travel from Florida to Valpo in September. Drew said NCAA personnel spoke with assistant director of athletics Jenn Samble on Tuesday, and he’s hoping to have the investigation resolved by today.
“It’s still our contention we haven’t done anything against the rules, and also that Mohamed hasn’t done anything against the rules,” VU director of athletics Mark LaBarbera said late Tuesday night. “I’m hopeful it can be resolved before we leave.”
If Crusaders personnel don’t hear from the NCAA by today, Kone will be forced to miss the trip to Oakland and thus miss his third straight game. The Crusaders will leave via bus for Oakland at 1:30 p.m. today, but Drew said Kone could take separate transportation if he’s cleared to play after their departure.
Without Kone, VU is 0-2, and the Crusaders have been outrebounded in both games. Before that, Valpo had won six straight games.
“It’s been real tough, to see how good we were playing, and all of a sudden it was a turnaround,” said Miles, who’s hoping to be cleared to practice by Friday, which will allow him to play Saturday against IUPUI at the Athletics-Recreation Center. “The surprise of Mo not playing, it kind of distracted us.
“We haven’t been keeping that focus that we were during that (six-game winning streak).”
Miles said he could not “keep anything down” — even fluids — due to the infection. He was throwing up daily and experiencing headaches. He said doctors ruled out meningitis.
“They had me on a clear liquid diet for three days last week,” Miles said. “Hopefully the fluids will stay down, and hopefully I’ll play soon.”
