David Carson made the decision to transfer from Oakland University to IPFW last summer.
The former Andrean High School star, who won't be eligible to play until December 2007, completed the move last week.
"I practiced for the first time today and got a workout with the coaches beforehand,'' the 6-foot-6, 230-pound Carson said. "It feels great to be here. I feel like I fit in with what the team is trying to do. I'm really excited about getting a fresh start here.''
Carson said he made the decision to leave Oakland because he wanted to be closer to home and allow more family members and friends an opportunity to watch him play.
The junior, who will have two years of eligibility remaining, said Oakland was approximately 4 1/2 hours from his home and Fort Wayne is about half that distance.
A connection with former Oakland assistant coach Jeff Tungate -- now associate head coach at IPFW under head coach Dane Fife -- and the fact IPFW was admitted to the Mid-Continent Conference last summer and will be competing in the league in the future also factored into his decision.
"Coach Tungate and I, we had a great relationship when he was at Oakland,'' Carson said. "When I decided to transfer, I contacted him first.''
Carson also considered transferring to UIC and Bowling Green, but decided IPFW's program was a good fit for him.
"I was happy they were admitted to the Mid-Con because I'm used to it,'' said Carson, who expects to play power forward for the Mastodons.
Carson said he decided on IPFW between mid-October and the beginning of November and actually moved into his new apartment in Fort Wayne last week.
As much as Carson is looking forward to competing for IPFW, he said leaving Oakland after two years was a difficult decision for him to make considering how long he'd been there.
"We had a good relationship when he was here, but I think the bottom line came down to playing time. David thinks he should be a starter and I think he should be," Oakland coach Greg Kampe said.
Kampe said Vova Severovas, a 6-6, 225-pound transfer from Wright State was playing ahead of Carson.
"His leaving hurts our team, but I understand why he made the decision,'' Kampe said. "Obviously he's a good college basketball player. On top of that, he's a good kid with good parents. I think David will have a great career at Fort Wayne. The last time I talked to him, I told him to take it easy on us in the future.''
