Old News but interesting player profile: 10. Vaughn Duggins – Wright State (Pendelton Heights) Duggins is the all around vision of traditional Indiana high school basketball. He is a clean cut looking player from a school that is considered far more country than inner city. However, his game is anything but traditional. Sure, he can shoot the lights out and did so at the pace of 26.7 points per game as a senior, but he also has a fluid motion that allows him to score easily on and off the dribble. He heads to Wright State as many Indiana players have in recent years and could be a integral part of a team that desperately wants to move forward in their evolution. Ironically, it will be Duggins and Leiendecker that will compete to be one of the top players from this class, as they will also compete to rule the Horizon League. www.collegehoopsnet.com/recruiting/060613.htm wsuraiders.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/duggins_vaughn00.html I think he's averaging over 30 minutes per game and over 9 points per game.

He was on the Indiana All-Star team, and really didn't play much in the game at Indianapolis. The sentence that gets me in that analysis is "a team that desperately wants to move forward in their evolution." In the early 1990s, Wright State was very good. They had a player named Billy Edwards, who I think may have been drafted. He was a very exciting player, and I remember Wright State coming to Valpo about 1991 or 1992 and just beating the crap out of VU. They have a great gym, and of course were one of the schools leading the charge to leave the Mid-Con. But then their coach (Jack Margenthaler - something like that) was arrested for something along the lines of stealing vitamins from either a GNC or a drugstore. Wright State really hasn't been very good since leaving the Mid-Con, which really breaks my heart. Maybe if Cigarboy visits again, he can straighten out my history a little bit. But I am surprised that Wright State hasn't been a better program in the past 10 years. Maybe there's too much competition for the top players with Dayton and Cincinnati close by.

Do you know if we recruited this kid?

I have no idea. Honestly, I wasn't overly impressed with him although he didn't get much PT in the all-star game I attended.

I have no idea. Honestly, I wasn't overly impressed with him although he didn't get much PT in the all-star game I attended. With those numbers he put up in high school and from what was written about him in the top-10 Indiana players for 06-07, he reminded me of Bryce a little bit. But putting up big numbers in smaller high schools doesn't necessarily extrapolate to the same thing in div.1 It will be interesting to watch this kid when we play in the Horizon League. I just love home-grown, Indiana basketball players. They play a certain kind of basketball that is fun to watch. Remember that guy from Bethel who shot the lights out at the ARC when they beat us in 98? He and his brother both were hard-nosed, fundamentally sound Indiana basketball players.

You're thinking of Ryan Bales from North Judson. I'm pretty sure he's coaching somewhere now, can't remember where.

I just looked it up. Bales in the NJ coach. If you'd like to take a little road trip, attending a North Judson home game is always an adventure.

Duggins was headed for UNCW. Their coach took the Wright State job so Vaughn reopened his choices. IU took a look at him this summer but did not offer. In the end he stayed with his original choice coach-wise.
He played at Pendleton Heights which is a 3A school (moving to 4A next season).
Margenthaler was the coach at Western Illinois before Kerwin I believe. The coach who got in trouble at Wright was Ralph Underhill or Underwood. He surfaced a few years back in the ABA.

Thank you, Ralph Underhill. He and the Western Illinois coach (the one before Kerwin) kind of looked alike.

Geez, indyvalpo, is everyone moving to the northwest corner of the Indy area? No wonder I-69 is so jammed up in the mornings. What kind of growth numbers are Carmel, Westfield, Noblesville, Fishers, Fortville & Pendleton showing these days? It must be over 20 percent or better each year. (this was in reference to your saying that Pendleton Heights was moving to 4A)

Well, yeah you can get there from Valpo and not have to drive on any stones. But once you get there, and listen to the fans, it's a wild ride.
