Today I approved a recommendation from Athletic Director Barry Collier to discontinue Butler’s intercollegiate men’s swimming and lacrosse programs effective June 1, 2007.
We will continue to honor all existing scholarship commitments for our lacrosse players. Swimming is a non-scholarship sport at Butler. Additionally, the student-athletes from both teams will continue to have access to the same services available to other varsity athletes, including academic services and athletic training.
We came to this difficult decision after a thorough analysis of our athletic programs. This comprehensive review uncovered the need to redirect resources within the program to ensure greater stability for Butler’s remaining 19 sports.
Intercollegiate athletics have played an integral role in Butler’s history. We remain committed to the success of our programs, and in providing the best possible experience for all our student-athletes. We believe this decision puts us in the best possible position to be successful in the future.
More information about this decision can be found online at www.butler.edu and butlersports.cstv.com/
Sincerely,
Bobby Fong
President Butler University
One thing you will notice is that it was MENS swimming that was cut (not womens swimming) and mens lacrosse (Butler played the "infamous" Duke Lacrosse team & lost by 19 goals in Durham).
They did not cut the football team because it was a money maker just like the football program at Valpo. Male athletes at Valpo should be glad that they haven't had any programs cut recently.
They weren't exactly packing them in for the lacrosse matches at Butler but I found it a very entertaining sport to watch. Also if you can take in a rugby match that is interesting too.
