Yes, the Huskies were a part of the Mid-Con for 4 seasons (1990-1994). They left at the same time year as the Horizon teams. I am not exactly sure why NIU (correction noted) joined. I believe there was a falling out between them and the MAC. Probably about the direction of football in the conference. They arrived, won the conference regular season title in their first season, lost in the conference tourney but received an at large bid. In four seasons they had a .576 winning percentage. Ultimately, they returned to the MAC where they belonged all along.

During their time in the league, Northern Illinois' Soccer Coach was Willy Roy, former US player and head coach of the professional NASL (outdoor) and MISL (indoor) Chicago Sting. The Chicago Sting won the NASL championship in '81 and '84 under Roy.

Northern Illinois always used to have a "we're better than you" attitude toward VU. The year they went to the NCAA Tournament, they had an awesome team. But after they left the league, I think every time Valpo played them the Crusaders came out on top. That was always fun. Their best player after they left the Mid-Con was TJ Lux from Merrillville. Supposedly, TJ wanted to come to Valpo but the coaching staff didn't offer him a scholarship. The scholarship instead went to Cory Gibson, who ended up being hurt a lot and ultimately transferred.
TJ, on the other hand, ended up as Northern Illinois' all-time rebounding leader and close to being the all-time scoring leader. His teams were never overly good though. I think if Homer was assessing his recruiting mistakes over the years, not taking TJ Lux might top the list.

I did not realize that the Huskies made a one year stop off in the Horizon after the Mid-Con experience...

I never understood NIU's attitude toward VU, but then Charlotte has been the same, and we've beaten them most times too. I would think before you can have a superior attitude toward another you should be able to beat them regularly...
