EIU was one of the original 8. They had one tourney championship which included an NCAA bid. They lasted 14 years (.414 winning percentage). This included 2 years after the mass exodus and restructure. They were invited and accepted a offer to join the OVC where their football team would play in the same conference as their other sports (Football had been in the Gateway). I am sure they desired the MVC but no offer was coming. Kevin Duckworth, a huge center, played for several seasons in the NBA. This rivalry stopped the year they left and I am not sure the two teams have ever played since.

Eastern Illinois had the best-looking dance team, too. They were better than the basketball team. Their coach, Rick Samuel, has been there forever (if he's still there).

On the EIU athletics website it shows Mike Miller as mens head basketball coach in his second year. Miller was an asst coach at Kansas State before becoming the Panthers head coach. He grew up in Monmouth, IL. www.eiu.edu/~sprtinfo/sports/bsktball/mcoaches.htm Trivia question: Can you name the three, YES, THREE NFL head coaches that are alumni of Eastern Illinois? Besides them current Cowboys quarterback, Tony Romo, is a graduate of EIU. Included as attenders at EIU are Burl Ives, John Malkovich, Joan Embry of the San Diego Zoo, actress Joan Allen and Dick's brother, Jerry Van Dyke, who once played a football coach on the show COACH.
