I can't believe that the powers at IPFW were thrilled to hear that the NBA D league was coming to town. Sports dollars just got spread a little thinner in the Fort.

Sports dollars may be thinner soon, but it gives another permanent sports team to the Coliseum there. Plus, Fort Wayne had a CBA franchise for years and they proved successful. It might just have been the need for remodeling of the Coliseum or conflicts in scheduling when Fort Wayne also had a hockey team there...? I hope the D League works out for them with so many NBA teams in the surrounding states for their players to hopefully get picked up by.

Fort Wayne is a great minor league town. The CBA drew well. Their hockey and indoor football teams have strong backing and I think they do well in baseball. When the Fury were in town, IPFW was a D2 program. Now as a D1 they need support and fans. This does not help them attract either.

I caught a couple Komets hockey games in Fort Wayne 10-15 years ago. I've never been too interested in hockey, but they were very fun events. A family friend, who lived in Fort Wayne, was a season ticket holder. He dyed his hair and beard orange for one of the games and had a large photo in the local newspaper. Unfortunately, much of his white hair was left undyed and they labeled him a human Dreamsickle.

The Komets average almost 8000 fans for a hockey game. The players from other teams comment often about Fort Wayne having a NHL feel. I believe that we are in the top 5 of all minor league hockey cities. I don't think that the D league team will hurt IPFW. If they do well in the Mid Con the fans will come.
