I don't get CSU at all. What conference do they think they will get in? I know they were probably "encouraged" to leave the Mid-Con, but why not drop down to D-2, where they belong talent-wise?

I would sure like to know the story (or strategy?) behind their leaving the Mid-Con. They're surely in a difficult spot as far as conference affiliation is concerned, but I don't think talent is the issue. First of all, they had already made some strides in the last few years (with a brutal schedule and crappy facilities). Second, with the new arena, a great Chicago recruiting base, and minimal admissions requirements they have the potential to put together a greating recruiting class. The problem really is that there are no geographically-appropriate conferences with openings nor is CSU a desirable program for most existing conferences. Not YET.

you're only looking at basketball....their problems with the Mid-Con were all the other sports they were supposed to support and couldn't....

Conference.......well, IPFW and the Dakotas have left the United Basketball Alliance so they can join Utah Valley, Texas Pan American and NJIT in a four team conference. Of course that really isn't a conference. But if you add Longwood, Savannah State and SIU-E you really have something! Worse than the Mid-Con with worse travel!

I have no reason to doubt that Chicago State had trouble supporting its other athletic teams, but then how did they come up with the money to build their new basketball arena? Doesn't the NCAA mandate that these schools financially support the nonrevenue sports as a part of their being granted D1 status?

You'd have to ask the NCAA how they got away with it, all I know is that they didn't fully support the nonrevenue sports that the Mid-Con required and that is why they were given the opportunity to leave. The source that gave me that information before they left is someone (not from Vu) who would have been privy to the matter. I can't explain what the NCAA watches or doesn't, but yes they are supposed to support so many D1 sports to keep their status. Unless there is a reason, I doubt the NCAA goes much past the paper work that is filed with them.

The funding comes from south side state senator Emil Jones who is the president of Illinois Senate and the political mentor for Barack Obama. He is responsible for steering a lot of funding CSU's way including "stealing" money originally intended for the U of I, quite a display of clout. The west side has the Pavilion and now the south side has the Convocation Center fulfilling the Chicago city motto "where's mine?"

Any chance Emil Jones has a son looking to play D1 basketball? ;D
