ROCHESTER, Mich. — The first time was the worst time for Valparaiso.
The Crusaders’ 16-0 record against Oakland disappeared Thursday night as Calvin Wooten scored 40 points to lead the Golden Grizzlies to a 95-89 victory at the Athletics Center Orena.
Oakland improved to 8-13 overall and 3-6 in the Mid-Continent Conference. Valpo, which lost its third straight, is 11-7, 4-4.
Wooten’s 40 points were the most scored by any Crusader opponent this season. He was 10-of-20 from the field, including 5-of-12 on 3-pointers, and made 15-of-16 free throws.
“We just could not stop Wooten,” Valparaiso coach Homer Drew said. “He had 40 points and just really hit some big threes. .... Wooten was the key. We tried three or four guys, couldn’t stop him and that was the difference in the game.”
Valparaiso had six players in double figures led by Ali Berdiel’s 25 points.
Ron Howard and Dan Oppland each scored points, and Mohamed Kone, in his first contest back after sitting out two games after an NCAA investigation, also scored 12 points.
“(Kone) did well — he was 4-for-8, had 12 points and was really good on defense,” Drew said.
Valpo twice cut the lead to three in the last five minutes, but each time the Grizzlies answered back. Vova Severovas hit his biggest shot of the night with 3:30 left, banking in a four-footer to put Oakland on top 80-73.
The score was 81-75 with less than two minutes to go when Wooten hit his fourth 3-pointer of the night with the shot clock winding down, applying the dagger to the Crusaders and ending the win streak.
Oakland jumped ahead 9-0 before four 3-pointers brought the Crusaders within 16-14 within five minutes of the opening tip. The Crusaders tied the game at 33 on a 3-pointer by Berdiel, then his free throw gave VU its only lead of the game at 45-44.
With the score tied at 48 late in the half, Brandon Cassise drained a leaning 26-foot three-pointer at the buzzer to put Oakland on top 51-48 at the break.
“With 1.2 seconds they threw up a desperation three that went in, so that gave them the three-point lead at halftime and it gave them good momentum,” Drew said.
Berdiel led the Brown and Gold with 14 points, three more than his season-high coming in, on 5-of-7 shooting. Jarryd Loyd (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) was also in double-figures with 10 points, adding a game-high five assists. Wooten led all scorers with 17, and the Grizzlies got 11 more from Vova Severovas. The Crusaders shot 65.4% from the floor in the first half, including 9-of-11 three-pointers, while Oakland hit on 63.3% of their shots and made 7-of-13 threes. Valpo committed 12 first half turnovers, but did dominate up front, out-rebounding the hosts 14-6.
