If we have such athletic team and guys are going hard (as many people on this board claim), why do we allow that many points?

I don't think we played very hard in the final 12 minutes yesterday. There were two dunks by MO that could have provided big momentum swings in our favor, but both times we let them come down the floor after the dunks and hit a three. Our guys appear to feel sorry for themselves when calls go against them or when the other team makes a run. Instead of clamping down on defense, we try to do too much on offense, which leads to fast breaks for the opponent. It is simply inexcuseable to allow a team to come back from a 22 point deficit with 12 minutes to go after allowing them just 25 points in the entire first half. Both the players and the coaches got their butts handed to them by a team that appears to just be tougher mentally and physically.

If we have such athletic team and guys are going hard (as many people on this board claim), why do we allow that many points? I think we (and maybe Homer) might be finding out that athleticism guarantees nothing as far as defense is concerned. Our attempt to get better athletes (no doubt we have 'em) to take us to the next level has resulted in a serious downgrade in our basketball acumen, especially for defense. Defense can't simply be about playing hard; there's got to be a skill to it as well as a critical need for teamwork. I think athletic players may sometimes never learn that skill because they can often exploit disparities in quickness and strength found at the high-school level. I think some of our players are very fundamentally poor. This is why they get a lot of fouls and, not coincidentally, seem to have trouble keeping the opponents scoring in control. The strange thing about this season, is that it may be giving me hope for next year. While earlier, I had feared a precipitous drop in performance after this team, (and even poo-pooed defense) I now feel that next year's team, in their relative lack of hype and athleticism, may be the best ever.

What does our defense stand for? I watch lots of college games on TV and I can tell what the defenses are trying to do to opposing offenses, but then I watch our games and it looks like we can't wait for the other team to shoot so we get a chance to go on offense. I don't know where to look other than to whatever coach is working on the team defense everyday. On the girls side I know that Coach Bruce is the "defensive guru", I don't know that our guys have much direction based on what I see on the court, or maybe they just don't listen.
Eventually these athletic players of ours have to figure out if they want to run and gun and fastbreak all the time that they have to first stop the opponent. It's awfully tough to fastbreak when you're taking the ball out of bounds every time.
