Our first year in the Horizon League was good. Even though we did not win any championships in our first year we did compete very well. Volleyball played in the championship match, Men’s Basketball lost in the semi-finals, Softball came within one game of winning the regular season title, and Baseball came within one game of playing for their tournament championship.
Our student-athletes won nine individual championships:

Steve Bartholomew - Indoor Weight Throw, Outdoor Hammer and Discus
Melanie Wilson – Indoor 60m High Hurdles, Outdoor 110m High Hurdles
Chris Honig - Outdoor 3,000m Steeplechase

We had eight student-athletes receive First Team All-Conference honors, eleven receive Second-Team All-Conference honors, three receive All-Newcomer Team honors and seven get named to All-Tournament Teams. Our student-athletes were recognized 32 times as players-of -the-week.
Jackie Thomas was named a Women’s Soccer Academic All-American and we also had nine Academic All-District selections and 18 Conference All-Academic Team selections.
We had 87 student-athletes named to the Horizon League Fall Academic Honor Roll, tops in the league, and 82 named to the Spring Academic Honor Roll, second in the league. We had an additional 43 student-athletes named to the Pioneer Football League Academic Honor Roll. Five teams received National Recognition from the NCAA for their Academic Progress Rates, best in the Horizon League.
The Men’s Basketball team was ranked fifth in average attendance with 3,866 per game. We were ranked first in percentage of seats filled at 73%. There was only one other school above 50%. Both the Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams were ranked third in average viewers per HLN broadcast. The Men’s quarter final game with Wright State was the most watched event on HLN. The Men’s team was the only program to have three regular season games broadcast by ESPN from their home gym. The game with Butler was the highest rated Horizon League regular season broadcast in three years.
We have already developed the reputation as a tough place to play and teams that compete hard every game. The quality of the Horizon League from the top to the bottom has made all of our programs better. We are looking forward to the coming year and the growing rivalries.
