Valparaiso University director of athletics Mark LaBarbera got one of those nothing-good-can-come-of-this phone calls early Tuesday morning. It was a campus police officer. No, none of LaBarbera’s athletes had made any ill-advised decisions. But his basketball staffs — men’s and women’s — were going to have to find somewhere else to work. Somewhere drier. It seemed the violent spat of storms that swept across the area hours earlier had rearranged the roof of the Athletics-Recreation Center. During the night, one of the covers of one of the building’s air handlers was dislodged and blown onto the Schrage Basketball Wing. The resulting damage was what you’d expect from a large, heavy object careening off the side of a building and falling onto another. “I am in the office, but it looks like a war zone in the ceiling,” VU men’s basketball administrative assistant Sherry Williams said via e-mail Wednesday. “A lot of the (ceiling) tiles are missing and lights are hanging down, and air dryers and humidifiers are everywhere. (You) cannot hear yourself think.” Williams and the rest of the basketball staffs were forced to work elswhere for at least some of the week because of the damage. The roof was punctured in several spots, the carpet was soaked and ceiling tiles were strewn about on the floor. Williams, as of Tuesday, wasn’t sure whether her computer would be salvaged. LaBarbera, as of Wednesday, didn’t know if the carpet would need to be replaced. “There was a lot of water in there,” LaBarbera said.
