For all you Hoosiers, I saw a report on the state of academcs in the US and part of the stuy centered on Shelbyville. Apparently one in three kids drop out of High School!!!! No wonder there is a shortage of college age students. So what's up??

What's wrong, Indy? Does Shelbyville have more than its share of "hillbillies?" I mean that in the most endearing manner possible.

I think some people from central Indiana refer to it as "Shelbytucky". It doesn't have the "brightest" reputation. But it is the home to Indiana Downs horserace track (which along with Hoosier Downs in Anderson just added slot machines) and one of the Indiana National Guard Airbases.

Well, it's better than IPS (Indianapolis Public Schools) which graduate 46% of their students. When you are more likely to drop out than graduate high school...there might be a problem. On top of that, it's the largest school system in the state. Yikes!

Official statistics from the IN State Dept. of Education show Shelbyville Sr. High School's 4-year graduation rate for ’06-07 at 78.1%, with another 9.8% still in school. mustang.doe.state.in.us/TRENDS/gradpie07.cfm?schl=7717 Are you sure it was Shelbyville, 72?

Yep, it was Shelbyville. I wish I could remember the program, it may have been 60 minutes. Several articles I've seen of late indicate that school officials are less than forthright concerning the actual graduation rates. Still, is 78.1 a good rate? Maybe so. I'm just really shocked and do not intend to demean Shelbyville or Indiana in general. Apparently there is a serious issue right here in my neck of the woods with Minneapolis public schools as well. Here is a release from the Indiana education director. Some schools are really falling down. www.doe.state.in.us/reed/newsr/2007/01-January/2006gradrates.html

do you think that number's higher than the number of politicians who can read? or just over their approval ratings?

The only reason I questioned the reference to Shelbyville is because their graduation rate (as poor as it is) apparently is about average for community school systems in Indiana. Rhetorical: What ever happened to the days when dropping out of high school was considered the lowest of lows? Where have we gone so far wrong as a society that one out of every four kids entering high school won't graduate in four years?

Thanks! So the quote is 12% of DC public school 8th graders are "proficient" in reading according to a certain standardized exam. (And only 8% proficient in math?) I don't have a specific definition of "read" in mind. But, maybe this is more like "only 12% can read well" rather than "88% illiterate"? Anyhow, shockingly bad numbers.
