The Valpo fund raising page says the athletic portion of the current drive is now complete. Does this mean that the track has been cancelled or is it still to be finished at a later date. Are funds currently on deposit for this purpose? Also, are funds on deposit to finish the lighting when the hospital is demolished or will this also require a new fund drive? Thanks for all you do...

It's still being planned....and there are plans for the lights immediately after the hospital moves (from the new Prez at kiwanis a few weeks ago)...not sure exactly where the funding sits

Thanks rlh. Can you fill us in more on President Heckler's other comments? Was there much discussion on athletics and did he give an indication as to his view on the importance (lack thereof) of athletic success/facilities?

The only comments he made about athletics was that he believed in a strong athletic foundation, just as he did a strong academic foundation to make a university great. His response on the lights was an answer to a question from the audience. He didn't comment much on athletics at all, other than what I just stated....others have told me that he has indicated he is strong supporter of athletics...so I would hope that means we will have some better facilities, etc. along the way. I'm not one that advocates doing away with the ARC, nor is the Athletic Director, but I can see upgrades being made to the locker rooms, maybe a new scoreboard at some point and such as that.....not sure what President Heckler thinks about those types of things. Maybe we can get him to respond on here at some point. I'll see what I can do....

From the Board of Directors' email today:
"Adopted a resolution authorizing the reconfiguration and conversion of the current University Book Center into a fitness center. Work will begin soon after the Book Center moves into the Harre Union with the expectation that the fitness center will be ready for use in time for the fall semester next year."
As for the track, I'm pretty sure that will have to be a separate funding campaign. The lights should be paid for already.

.....maybe a new scoreboard .... For the short term, I'd be happy if they would replace the burned out lights in the present scoreboard.

Maybe we can get him to respond on here at some point. I'll see what I can do.... Fantastic. I actually was thinking about trying to expand this forum to include a section for general Valpo talk. I think it would be unique and quite useful if current students and alumni could come here and discuss everything and anything about the University in addition to the sports. Thoughts?

I'm for your suggestion '04. The "off topic" section is very broad, and your idea of a specific section for "general Valpo talk" sounds interesting. Only issue I could see would be making others aware of the board and new section, and getting them to participate and share info.

I have created the board, back to the regularly scheduled thread... Which was hijacked twice, BTW (once by me).

The track is still an active project. The Brown Field facility was designed and the first phase constructed leaving room for the track. When we have completed raising the required funds everything is prepared to install the track around the field.
The first phase, the ProGrass field, inculdes the the funding for the lights. Once the hospital closes (likely in April 2011) the lights will go up.
