While we're holding our collective breaths waiting for decisions from Bouchie and Martin, I thought I'd offer up something a little less dramatic. According to today's NWI Times, Hillary Clinton is going to make a campaign stop in Valpo on Sat. - location not mentioned. However, I heard last night that the Clinton team would like to hold a rally at the University. The only other time I can ever recall a presidential candidate coming to VU was the late Bobby Kennedy. Edit: I did a little more research. Robert F. Kennedy was at the VU gym on April 29, 1968. He was assassinated on June 5, 1968.

Eugene McCarthy also visited the campus just days prior to Kennedy. The contrast was a lesson in the men and the financing of their campaigns. Bobby Kennedy rented out Hilltop Gym and had a jazz band to war up the crowd before he spoke. "Clean Gene" addressed an audience in a windy parking lot behind Moellering Library...

New York mayor Lindsey also visited Valpo. I remember him pulling up to the union. I suppose it was also part of th 1968 campaign

She has very little student support, but I suppose the ARC would be the largest facility in the area.

Shows how much things have changed in 40 years. I believe that LBJ did not decide if he was running until late March or early April of 1968. Then the free for all started. Now, it seems, everyone decides they are in about a year before the first primary/caucus, and most are out by mid February. With Indiana still holding the primary the first week in May, the presidential races are usually locked up prior to the primary. Indiana actually may have some say in the democratic nominee.

Actually, the way things were going with this election, it seems like the nominees were declaring a run on the day after Election 2004 or Inauguration Day. The ones who really stood no chance were blackballed by the media right away, which is why you saw Richardson, Kucinich, and the other Democrats, followed by Thompson, Giuliani, and the many others dropping out right away. I have a strong feeling that the 24-hour news cycle did some of these candidates in, not anything they said or did, but what the guys at Fox News, MSNBC and CNN thought.
I wouldn't even bother attending anything that happens around Valpo that involves Hillary because I'm scared to death of what would happen to our nation if she was to win the election. I don't feel that we would ever get over the recession that we're currently facing, and that we may be in a depression faster than we know.

Not sure why you feel that way, but even though I'm not a Hillary supporter, it's a big deal for someone of her stature to come to VU. IF I didn't already have other plans, I'd probably go see her just to say I had. When I was Sales Manager of the radio station in Fairmont, Minnesota, I got to shake hands with Walter Mondale when he ran, even though I wasn't for him either. I still admire people who rise to that level, not matter what my personal politics might be

I had to cover the Obama rally in Gary today. I can't stand the man, and I've covered nearly 20 presidential events and presidential candidate events, and each time they're pretty interesting whether I like the person or not. You don't get visits like that all the time in smaller towns so they should be relished regardless of party.
