As important to us sports fans as anything is the future position of Valpo's next President. Today is Alan Harre's last day as President after 20 years at the helm. We should all be very grateful to him for his work and leadership as Valpo is clearly in a superior position both academically and athletically. The question is, what now? Mark Heckler has no experience at a school where athletics were important or, in some cases, even existed. I certainly haven't met the man but he appears to be a person of great energy and obvious acomplishment. How will this translate to Valpo and specifically to athletics and its importance to the growth and national recognition for Valpo? Time will tell. Lets hope the Pesident and the Board see an expanded role for athletics and its natural ability to promote Valpo. As I have said on many occasions, "You can't want to go to Valpo if you've never heard of it". What easier way to promote the name than by being on national tv? I remember vividly the discussion about why Valpo was playing Capital University in basketball a couple of years ago. One poster wrote "why are we playing this unknown little school anyway". The reality is the Capital and Valpo are probably as close in status and size as any two schools yet we, and many others, percieve Valpo as the bigger and more recognizable institution. This leads to an improved value to our degree. In case my position was in question, I think we should not only maintain our national exposure but dedicate a significant improvement to funding to lead to even greater national name recognition. That's it from sunny Minnesota...

Well said, vu72. I agree with your thinking and hope the new president and board will as well. Hopefully the next fund raising campaign includes additional dollars designated for athletics and for additional facility upgrades and improvements. I also want to wish the Harre's all the best and hope they enjoy their retirement. May God continue to bless them both!

I sure hope he puts importance on athletics as well....but don't we have some type of board that can help out if he chooses not to? I would imagine there are people who can circumvent his authority if he does choose to drop programs, and put less emphasis on programs??

Although I didn't always agree, Alan Harre did a tremendous job for Valparaiso University and I add my best wishes for he and his wife in their retirement.....as far as the new President, I have not met him yet, although I would guess he will be one of our halftime interviews next basketball season...but I don't think he can arbitrarily drop any sports...I would think that would have to be approved by the Board of Directors....I doubt that he would want to anyway. I'm told he is a big supporter of a strong athletic program

Kind of a minor thing but I hope someone in charge of the Valpo.edu website changes Mark Heckler's title on the front page to President instead of President-elect tomorrow. Old news is thought of as inappropriate and noticed immediately. It will be watched by more people than I'm sure most people would think. That front page is the face of VU on the internet.

FORGETABOUTIT! Well, at least this particular rant is entertainingly confusing. Poorly spelled, misuse of punctuation, alternating ALL CAPS, all over the board. My head is spinning.... head rush... cool ;D

Quotes from the ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS,April 21,1999. "Around Columbine High School they were known as the dorks, the loners, and the outcasts. They called themselves the Trench Coat Mafia." "On Tuesday police said two members of the Trench Coat Mafia - Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold shot dozens of people at their school and then shot themselves." "They were normal kids who did formal stuff. They were also kids who spoke German to each other, listened to German technomusic and were fans of Aldolph Hitler. "The group considered themselves outside the norm said Mark Heckler father of group member Zack Heckler." So what does this have to do with Valpo football and Valpo? Nothing, just FYI. Read the article for more info.

When you get done with reading that article maybe you should read this one. New president recalls Columbine

It is interesting, however, that the article from the Valpo website fails to mention that not only was Mark Heckler's son classmates with Harris and Klebold he was their FRIEND!

What possible significance does this have to do with a sports forum?

What possible significance does this have to do with a sports forum? I guess someone felt this was important because it is an off-topic board. I don't see its relevance to anything. If the Columbine tragedy had been an issue, I trust the Board would have gone in a different direction. Best wishes and years to come for President Heckler and his family in this new path God has put them on.

What possible significance does this have to do with a sports forum? It doesn't have anything to do with sports. That's why it's in the off topic section with the sub title "Talk about anything here."
