On the lower left hand side of the webcam's view of the union, adjacent to the walkway, is a large white object. What is it: Sign post?Light Post? Statue of Jesus?Crusader Logo? What? Thanks!

What I think you are talking about are the blue light emergency phones. They are found throughout campus. They call directly to VUPD. We have a form of them inside the building as well. Inside everything is moving along at a rapid pace. Everyday there is something different. I would say we are moving along to finish on time. We keep our fingers crossed.

Hey unionguy, thanks for the info. relative to the placement of the blue light emergency phone. Makes sense. Question: Will the name Harre Union appear in big block letters over the entrance to the union? If so, I'm afraid that some people will enter the union with beards, long hair and unshaven legs (Hairy Union). Is this a concern?

There will be numerous signs around the building with the name Harre Union. We made sure of that. Keep the questions coming and I will be glad to respond. I think everyone will be very proud of the building once it is complete.

Unionguy! My last comments on this subject for the near term, but I need to say that at 10:10 EDT the union, bathed in sunlight ,looks great. We won't be at HC this year, but expect to be there for my 55th. next year.We look forward to touring Harre at that time and sampling the food at one or two of the food stations (Italian,Chinese?). A job well done. THANKS!

55th anniversary JJ? A good 'ol 1954 VU grad? You must be about the only one left. Too bad you don't live in Indiana, I could sell you a Medicare supplement.

89,the only supplement to Medicare that I need is two fingers of a single malt at days end. Keeps the doctors away. Had a lousey round of golf the other day. Only hit two good balls, stepped on a rake in a sand trap. The new union really looks great. Wish I could say the same for the football team.

Don't know if you noticed this, but if you go to the Valpo main page and click "more" on the Harre Union Construction site, you will see, on the upper left hand side, a "walking tour" option.
Really cool! Shows pictures from the inside with commentary about what the main features will be. Very impressive!

Took a little while to find and was pretty interesting so I thought I would post this link. Union Walking TourWill have to try it sometime when I have a better connection. Somehow I had previously missed the Union FAQ . "What food choices will we have in the new Union? The Dining Room will serve a variety of food specialties including brick oven pizza and char-broiled items, wok cooking, a large fresh salad and soup bar, and daily specials. Numerous items will be cooked fresh and made to order. Sunday waffles will remain a specialty. There is also a grab-and-go-area for take-out convenience. In the Café there will be fresh baked pizza, charbroiled items, Freshens products, a coffee and bakery shop as well as a large convenience store. The Café will be open late each night for fast food options." Sounds like an improvement. If I remember well, unionguy told us they're growing this from within the current food service infrastructure, rather than bringing in an outside firm. I hope they can pull it off! I hope the pizza is better than the "delivery" option they offered on the weekends in the late 90's. It couldn't be much worse! (I'll admit that the pizza occasionally on offer during meal times was better. Not great, but substantially better.)

One other amusement: "How much will it cost and how will it be funded? The total project cost is $74 million, including building construction, furnishings, kitchen equipment and an operating endowment. No tuition dollars will be used." Not much of an answer to "how will it be funded?"!

All of the money to make this project happen has come from donors. As I said we have not used any tuition dollars. I hope this is helpful.
