Th Valpo website is reporting that a news conference wll be held at 11 central concerning the presidential search committee. It is being webcast so I don't think this is just some sort of update. This is a VERY big decision that of course will effect all of Valpo but could swing the athletic efforts one way or the other. Stay tuned...

Here are the contents of that e-mail:
To all members of the campus community:
It is with much pleasure that at a news conference on campus this morning I will announce that the Board of Directors unanimously elected Mark A. Heckler as the next president of the University. The Search Committee appointed by the Board nominated him for the position following extensive review and evaluation of many well qualified candidates. He will succeed President Harre effective July 1, 2008.
You may recall from information shared previously that president-elect Heckler has served for the past five years as Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs at the University of Colorado Denver. He is a key member of the leadership team that manages this large and complex institution.
He is a person of strong faith, integrity and compassion, who is enthusiastic about the opportunity to support Lutheran church-related higher education. After attending faith-based institutions as an undergraduate and graduate student, a distinguished career teaching at a faith-based college, and proven success as an administrative leader at UC Denver, Mr. Heckler desires to dedicate his career to serving higher education in the Lutheran community that he and his wife chose for their faith home nearly 25 years ago.
He believes he has been called to ensure that those who come in the future have the same opportunity for an outstanding education in a faith-based environment—a place of discovery and creativity. In Valparaiso University, he believes he has found his educational and spiritual home.
President-Elect Heckler’s achievements in higher education are impressive. He has demonstrated his ability to build cohesive teams, listen intently, think strategically, then plan and execute the vision.
If you wish to watch the news conference, it will be available on the Internet via video-streaming. A link to news conference coverage will be located on the home page of the University’s Web site.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, please join me in welcoming President-Elect Heckler even as we collectively express our deep gratitude to Alan Harre for his tireless dedication and achievements over the past 20 years.
David J. Hessler Chair, Board of Directors
I went to a student forum with Mr. Heckler when he made his visit to campus a few weeks ago. I was completely sold on him after about an hour of listening to him answer student questions and him asking us questions. His resume indicates he is a great leader and communicator and it was evident during that session that he has the ability to bring people together. When he was responding to questions, you could tell that there were people in the room that although they may not have completely agreed with him, could understand and respect his point of view. He also indicated several times during the session that he would be a supporter of athletics, which should be exciting for everyone on this board.
Based on my personal observations and what I heard from others, including students, faculty and staff, the search committee nailed this selection much like Sam shooting a 26 foot three pointer.

Did you have the opportunity to hear the other two candidates?
I'm alittle shocked as this guy doesn't even have his Phd yet. Nonetheless, the Board has made a strong statement that Valpo wanted the best choice rather than following the old pattern of selecting a Lutheran pastor (one of the other guys) or someone coming from another Lutheran school (both of the other guys)Let me add that this "old" pattern has worked well before (Alan Harre) so I'm not knocking it other than to say that they decided that the best choice was the most important thing rather than following precedent.
The selected gentlemen is also (I believe) the youngest of the three and hopefully will bring great energy to the position.

Unfortunately, I did not have a chance to go to the forums of the other two candidates. Although I have talked to many people that did get a chance to hear all three and it seemed pretty unanimous that Heckler stood out above the others. He definitely is the unconventional choice, but as the letter from the board indicates, he is the right choice!

8-)Right? No PhD.,Elizabethown College undergrad,Catholic Univ. graduate work (Master's) and maybe a forthcoming PhD or EdD from the Univ. of Colorado-Denver. Underwhelming. But his tenure at Siena gives him even greater credibility(sure).Perhaps we can get a game with the "Saints." Oh well, at least he has the most important qualifier:FAITH BASED. Look what's that done for Dubya and Hucklebee and unfortunately, the good old USofA. Good luck.

Just a hint: Keep hiring faculty with terminal degrees, be faith based and believe in your community. Your academic reputation will never be tarnished! Therefore, hire a President that is willing to make athletics the welcome mat to your university. It's the best marketing you will have! The country would love VALPO - Espn would be a great visable tool to make VALPO prosper - hope you are reading Mr. President!
