In case you wondered, yes, it's that Purdue women's team that just advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Women's Tournament....the same Purdue team that our VU women beat earlier in the season. Just shows how a season can change, after that win and the close call with Notre Dame, beating Florida State and Bowling Green, there was a lot of hope for the ladies. It shows how tenuous sports can be that Purdue ended up going one way, and we struggled.....

Mich State takes down Duke.
Why was that game played @ Mich State?

The NCAA pre-selects the 16 sites that it uses for first- and second-round games in the women's tournament. Then, when bracketing the teams, they set up all the "pods" and each host school plays at home.
I think its a joke that a #9 seed had a home game against a #1, but the same thing happened at LSU (#3/#6) and wouldv'e happened at Notre Dame (#2/#7).

They've discussed this during the telecasts, and the announcers in the studio have justified it several times....the women have home games because they want to attract a crowd. Purdue has hosted several times and is almost always in the field at home. However, it seems wrong that a #1 seed has to play someone on their home floor, but maybe there's no way around it.

Don't get me wrong, I think playing on home courts is a must. I just don't get how a top seed doesn't get to play at home, especially when Duke always has a good crowd at home. Not really fair that they are the same seed as MD and UConn and those two get two home games while Duke and OU get none. Also was odd to see Duke in home whites and Michigan St. in green.

It isn't right, basically...but logistically for TV to cover every game, they have to know well in advance what sites will be used, rather than just finding out on Selection Monday...
Personally, I think the way it was in the past where seeds 1-4 in each region hosted their pod (unless there was some conflict with the facility or hotels, etc...in which case that school was able to look for their own replacement) was right. However, that's just not possible looking at the demands from TV

Extra glee in Lansing, sparked by bad feelings, or so goes the vibe I'm picking up when I visit the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News these days (Duke's coach used to be at MSU). Am I tuned in correctly, valpospartan?

Yes. Joanne McCauley (sp?) was at MSU, took them to a Final Four...she had signed a contract extension two years ago to remain at MSU, but when Jody Conradt retired at Texas, Gail Goestenkors moved there from Duke, opening the door for McCauley.
This led to a lot of hard feelings from the fans, players, administration, etc...

The Blue Devil had "YOUR COURT, OUR COACH" written on athletic tape on his forehead at the game.
