Today was the 10th. anniversary of the Columbine murders. Given the fact that the Hecker's had a connection to the shooters, was there any kind of a memorial on the VU campus today?

I don't think that the fact (or rumour) that the Heckler's son knew the shooters is really a connection to the Columbine massacre...but even if it could be construed as such, why would VU have a rememberence other than that everyone in the country should have...the news media did a good job of reminding us....

Not that it's important, but it is a fact that Heckler's son (and Heckler himself) knew the shooters. Quiet loners worried other studentsBelow is a direct quote from the above article from president Heckler in reference to the "Trench Coat Mafia."

i was only 11 when columbine took place-i didn't realize that heckler was so close to the story. there wasn't so much as a mention of columbine anywhere on campus that i heard. maybe tomorrow. while president heckler may have had a connection to the columbine shooters, i think students here are more worried about another va tech/niu type incident, because that's the environment that we're in right now.

I don't think there is any need for a remembrance at VU either. I agree with rlh about this. I wouldn't have issue with it mentioned in a prayer at morning prayer time, but there is no need for anything major.

www.vuslforum.org/2009/03/news/would-you-know-what-to-do-in-an-active-shooter-situation/ This is the closest thing I could find to associating the Columbine Shooting 4/20/1999 to Valparaiso University. I do know that President Heckler mentioned the personal growth he experienced in 1999 from his close association to the Columbine shooters and having to deal with the outcomes and trauma of the situation during his interviews for the VU president's position. I believed he mentioned it because it is well documented in the Colorado newspapers that he was associated with the Columbine shooters and he demonstrated a very Christian principle of pulling positive elements and responses from evil and dark situations. I believe the only things the Valpo community needs to take from the Columbine situation in 1999 is to be prepared in case a situation similar is developing at Valpo and to make the community aware of possible scenarios, that the personal growth of VU's president was deeply affected by this situation in Colorado in 1999 and showing Christian compassion through prayer for the victims of this situation in Colorado in 1999. If for those in the community that feel a public display of remembrance is warranted they may be too late but they could always demonstrate that in a personal but public display by the wearing of an armband or similar display that some may ask them about during the day. Just my 2 cents.
