I just returned to campus from being abroad in Japan for the Spring, and I was hoping that some of these problems would have been addressed. I was wrong. While Valpo has made incredible strides in campus beautification in the past few years, there are still MAJOR, MAJOR problems. These problems aren't even that expensive to fix, and they are being completely ignored. When I give tours of campus, I am genuinely EMBARRASSED when I see these things. I have tried to raise awareness to my superiors in the admissions department, and I have even contacted the director of Facilities Management, to no avail. I URGE YOU to contact anyone you might know who can help this. It can only help if a bunch of you contact Fred Plant, the director of Facilities Management at fred.plant@valpo.edu .
1. The former CHAPEL DRIVE.
Chapel Drive was closed and seeded for grass during the summer of 2008. A year later, more than 5 months after the Union opened, this STILL REMAINS. If you need some orientation as to where this picture was taken, I was between the Chapel and the NEW UNION. Seriously, in the center of campus, there are parallel sidewalks, huge patches of dirt, and a CURB from the original Chapel Drive. Simply DISGUSTING.
And these puny, pathetic trees are at the edge of both ends of Chapel Drive.
2. Sidewalks
Valpo's sidewalks are notoriously poor. Often, concrete sidewalks run into concrete ones, and there are so many dirt trails where sidewalks do not exist.
This patch of sidewalk is next to the CHAPEL. Yes, the CHAPEL. Valpo's most recognizable structure has a sidewalk that looks like this.
But like I said before, Valpo is making strides at improving. Here is an example of some new sidewalks between Urschel Hall and Wehrenberg Hall.

Like I said before, I don't find this to be acceptable. If you know someone who can help address these problems, please let them know that campus appearance is IMPORTANT! I will likely be posting additional problems and eyesores as the summer goes on. Please, do something about this!
