Just so everyone knows, we've received even MORE commitments by students to attend Valpo for the Fall semester than this time last year. So much for doom and gloom....

GOOD! Do we have enough financial aid to assist those that need it?

GOOD! Do we have enough financial aid to assist those that need it? Well, commitments come AFTER financial aid packages, so apparently the answer is yes.

<bitter> Valpo doesn't necessarily do a good job of keeping track of National Merit Finalists. </bitter>
Great to hear of good numbers at Valpo. What fraction of the incoming class would normally have committed at this point? I guess anyone choosing from "selective" schools....
They've only paid a small deposit at this point? There's been some concern in higher ed that more people would walk out of deposits in the bad economy.

FANTASTIC!! How many National Merit Finalists, valedictorians and salutatorians among the masses? Not sure about this class either, in the past a typical freshman class has between 5 and 6% of its membership who were either valedictorians or salutatorians.

Yeah, I don't have details either unfortunately, but I just know that we are doing better than we were this time last year, and commitments are still coming in daily. There is a small fear of students paying the deposit and not coming (I know of one case personally where this has happened), but with more commitments coming now, we have some room for circumstances like that.

I think the class of 08-09 was smaller than anticipated due to the union construction. One of our daughters looked at VU but the campus looked like Berlin after the war and she went to Wheaton. Our visit was in the spring of 07. I think VU would've had more of a chance if the Union had been completed and the campus wasn't completely torn up. I have a feeling a lot of kids during the 07-early 08 time period decided not to go to VU since they just couldn't mentally get past the torn up campus. Not a problem now, though. Paul

Paul The attached details enrollment and other things for the 07-08 year. I really don't think the enrollment has changed much although last year, as I recall, was a little higher because of increased enrollment in programs like the MBA and Law school. www.valpo.edu/150/history/facts.php Here are some stats from last year: www.valpo.edu/marketing/traditionsfacts/fastfacts.php

The graduation rates are interesting.
"Graduation Rates 4 year: 63% 5 year: 74% 6 year: 75%"
Along with "Freshman to sophomore year retention rate 84% (returned for 2008) National Average (4-year MA Pvt): 78%"
I wasn't expecting them to be quite that low. I guess they're not _that_ low. But, saying that one in four freshmen won't graduate seems a bit scary! (And one in ten sophomores...)

These numbers are interesting too:
"New Student Academic & Enrollment Information as of October 2008 Total Number of New Students: 819 Total Applications: 3,843 Total Admitted: 3,063 (80%)"
Admit 80%, about a quarter of who will attend. Is the 80% number a bit lower than in the past? Probably a fine trend, if so...
Thanks for the stats!

Our ACT range (22-28) needs to improve a bit. I think it used to be 23-29, although I'm not sure. The top schools in our category (Butler, Creighton, Xavier, Drake) are a notch higher. I'm disappointed the Lutheran percentage is only 26%. This is very surprising to me. Paul

The place definitely has a significant "Regional" feel on top of its "Lutheran" feel. I wonder if the Lutheran, and non-regional, numbers might be higher among top students (e.g. in Christ College).

Here is the report that all the stats were based off of www.valpo.edu/registrar/assets/pdfs/cds08-09.pdfI think that press release paints a rosier picture that what's actually going on. According to that report, 28% of incoming freshmen last year had below a 3.0 in high school. 6% had below a 2.5 in high school. If you look at the reports from previous years, it appears that Valpo admissions standards are actually being lowered.
