They actually made the conference tourney last year and gave NDSU a good run for their money for most of the game (playing them neck-and-neck I mean). Now the women's team continues to be a joke I believe, but I figured they'd turned the men's team around to be competitive again. Thank god for USD, they can still be a 10-team league I'm guessing not too many tears are being shed over this demotion around the conference

The problem NCAA wise as I understand it, is that the Summit may lose it's automatic baseball bid if they don't do something about it. If that would happen, Oral Roberts would be out of the Summit immediately

It looks like Centenary will be in Division I for two more years. That might make it a bit tough to recruit D-1 caliber athletes, knowing they're dropping down soon, unless they get some JC transfers. RLH is right about Oral Roberts and the baseball bid - but, is ORU good enough in baseball to earn an at-large bid? I have no idea how the NCAA Division I baseball tournament works.

I don't either, but with all the complaining they do about their seeding because of the conference competition, I would think it would be more difficult for them if they don't have an automatic..

What is the situation that could affect the conference auto-bid to make this any kind of a major story? I guess I feel like I could use some more details...

A conference has to have a certain number of members in that sport that have a) been in the league for a set amount of years and b) have been eligible for post-season play. With Centenary leaving, that leaves the Summit with just four baseball teams that have been in the league since Valpo left. If CC stays for two years, the conference should be fine.
