This is from the faculty/staff newsletter that came out today. All I can say is IT'S ABOUT TIME!
"During its July meeting, the Board also approved a resolution that revises its policy on serving alcohol on campus and at other University events. The policy change will allow alcohol to be served at University events such as Homecoming, building dedications, or donor engagement and stewardship events. External groups also will be able to request for alcohol to be served at events such as wedding receptions and civic and business organization events. Alcohol will not be permitted at events designed primarily for students. Requests to serve alcohol at on-campus University and non-University events now will go through an approval process administered by a committee of University administrators. Detailed policies and procedures that implement the Board’s policy are currently in development."

You mean a 60 year old can get a glass of wine on campus?? WOW! How novel!!
This just makes sense. I understand the change over the years but not being able to have a beer at Homecoming in my fraternity house seems silly at best.
This has to do entirely with Mark Heckler. Alan would have not changed this policy. (This is speculation on my part and nothing that I have heard one way or another!)

it may be speculation, 72, but it's probably got some merit. but it is about time, i agree.

Didn't Harre already allow exceptions to this policy? I'm fairly sure I've seen wine served at VUCA receptions and the like. I thought this policy was just them making a coherent policy out of existing exceptions.
Anyhow, a welcome move in either case.
vu72 - your fraternity's house is off campus, right? Even the students are allowed to drink there.

When I've been back I've been told that the University won't allow the house to serve alcohol even to alumni. I know they can no longer have kegs and I think they have to send a list of invitees to have any type of party with booze and it probably has to been away from the house. The policy seems rediculous. In my day (jeez, I'm starting to sound like jj ) :banghead , We would of course have kegs going for Homecoming, or any party for that matter. It was a great part of welcoming the brothers back. I think the policy of intimidation (having campus police enter without a warrant etc) is troubling and does little to encourage proper alcohol consumption. If a house is serving underage kids then they should have their ability to serve taken away. I just don't think they have any legal ability to serve now. Do the brothers consume beer in the house? No comment.

72, if you're referring to last year's Homecoming, Phi Psi was on probation (as were we). We weren't allowing our alumni to consume alcohol either.

This is the best news I've heard since winning our last football game against mighty Campbell on 11/15/08. Go Valpo!

No, I wasn't referring to last Homecoming specifically. I guess I don't understand the universities policy with booz and fraternities. Can you detail it for us? My understanding includes: no kegs allowed. You must register the people at a party with the University (only if booze is served??) What exactly does the policy say? Can you, for example, have a party (on the first floor!) on a Saturday night, where beer is served toanyone over the age of 21? Do police have the right to enter your house without reason? Are they still checking breath for booze at dorms? Thanks!
