How did the new fitness center turn out? For those of you who have used it, what do you think of it? paul

Okinawatyphoon,
It would be great to see some pictures of the new fitness center, whether students/faculty/staff are in it, or you just happen to get in before it is open for the day. Also, it would be great to see some other photos of activities happening on campus. Since this board tends to be a good recruiting device, whether for new athletes or new students.

I know you are now busy with classes etc but I really enjoyed the pictures. How about some of athletic events? Not so much the action but rather the fans, to get a feel of what the atmosphere is like at say, soccer game or football game. Thanks again for all your efforts!!

I'll try and stop by there with a camera soon, but it is a top-notch facility. I didn't anticipate how busy I'd be once classes started! haha.

I know you didn't mean this. Only pictures of quality looking women working out in there are accepted!!

Sorry I didn't take pictures personally, but the new fitness center website is up and has a lot of great pictures. Just go to the link I posted here and make sure to actually "mouse over" the floor plan for images. www.valpo.edu/fitnesscenter/facilities/tour.php

Thanks for the link! Looks terrific. Light years ahead of anything available to students while I was at VU.
It's available to students free of charge? Do faculty use it as well?
The locker room facilities look a bit limited? Are there enough lockers, at least for temporary use? Enough showers?

I might add that I'm a bit jealous. I wish I had free access to facilities that nice, here at CERN. I'm too cheap to pay for a membership, especially at European prices!

The locker room facilities look a bit limited? Are there enough lockers, at least for temporary use? Enough showers? For students, it's free of charge because it's included in our activities fee. But faculty and staff must pay to use it (I forget how much). It is used quite a bit by students (more so than the other facility), but I haven't noticed many faculty or staff using it. The locker room facilities are small and there is only one shower per bathroom, but according to the staff that work there, locker and shower facilities were hardly ever used in the old facility. I would say that was a good place to save money, because I've hardly seen the locker room used (and I use the fitness center a few times a week). Overall, the fitness center is a great asset to the university now, and I'm glad we decided to push ahead with this instead of waiting for more improvements to the ARC and/or a fieldhouse addition.

The ARC upgrade or a fieldhouse is still needed for the athletic teams, but at least the fitness center gives those non-student-athletes a place to go workout with a more open schedule than was allowed in the rather small weight room in the ARC. More students will use a fitness center if there are more hours that the space is open. The little cardio room was always busy around 3-6, that time around dinner, and the weight room had really random availability, so having this fitness center that is open to everyone with more available hours is a real benefit to the students on campus because they have a place to go workout that isn't small or intimidating.

Not so easy for those off campus, or for faculty and staff. And, what about in the winter? Do sweaty students want to bundle up and head home before taking a shower? *shrug*

Yeah, I mean, I did it all the time after Ultimate Frisbee (sometimes long drives to distant pick-up or games), and still do after softball games. Somehow free weights and cardio just go along with locker rooms for me Spoiled childhood, perhaps.
